Ryan Schlater Named to Bench Award Watch List

The senior catcher has been named a list of the nations top 42 backstops for the award.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Senior catcher Ryan Schlater has been named among the nation's top 42 backstops in college baseball and placed on this year's Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award, delivered by Papa John's Pizza.

Schlater, a native of Saint Henry, Ohio, is one of three Mid-American Conference catchers named on the Watch List. David Lyon of Kent State University and Brett Frantini from Northern Illinois University join Schlater on that list.
Last season, Schlater finished the year with a .314 batting average, five home runs, 37 runs batted in and a .466 slugging percentage. He ended the year with a .977 fielding percentage and caught 7-of-30 runners attempting a stolen base against him (.189).
Significant award winners include former Cleveland Indians Ryan Garko (2003) and Kelly Shoppach (2001) and most recently, San Francisco Giant Buster Posey (2008).
The list will be trimmed down to the award semi-finalists on May 19 with finalists named on June 6. The winner will be announced in Wichita, Kansas on June 30.
