BGSU begins three-match conference homestand vs. Huskies
The Bowling Green State University tennis team, after playing several matches in chilly, windy Las Vegas, Nev., has returned to the sunny skies and balmy temperatures that typify Northwest Ohio in late March. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean open Mid-American Conference play this weekend, hosting Northern Illinois University in Saturday (March 24) action at Keefe Courts. Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., with singles matches to follow.
BGSU STATS & MATCH-BY-MATCH RESULTS
In the event of inclement weather, Saturday's NIU match would be held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
The Falcons are 4-5 on the season after dropping a pair of matches during the Vegas trip. BGSU fell to Houston by a 5-2 count on Sunday night (March 18), then lost a 6-1 decision to Kansas on Monday (March 19) before returning home.
BGSU has not faced an opponent at Keefe Courts since the season-opening BGSU Invitational back on Sept. 16-17, 2011. The Falcons won a total of five flight championships that weekend, with juniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland all winning singles crowns, and Reuland teaming with senior Jessica Easdale for a doubles title.
The Falcons, believe it or not, have not played a dual match at Keefe Courts in nearly two years. Last season saw BG play four April matches at the PTC due to forecasts of precipitation and/or high winds. The last match at Keefe came on April 23, 2009, against Akron.
Dean and assistant coach Cindy Yonker tried some new doubles lineups on the Vegas trip. Sunday's Houston match saw the Falcons use three teams who were playing together for the first time this season, including one - Eccleston and Grubb - that played as a duo for the first time in their respective Falcon careers.
BG's other two Sunday doubles teams were comprised of Chiricosta and Reuland, and juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson. On Monday vs. Kansas, Chiricosta teamed up with Hill, while Eccleston was paired with Reuland. Easdale and Grubb played together for the first time in 2011-12 against the Jayhawks.
In all, Dean has now used a total of 15 different doubles combinations. Reuland has now played at least one doubles match with each and every one of her six teammates this season.
In singles, Eccleston played at the top flight in both matches in Vegas, while Chiricosta filled the number-two spot in the lineup. Eccleston and Chiricosta each have split time at the top-two flights during dual-match play.
Reuland and Hill have played at the third and fourth flights, respectively, in all nine duals to date. Easdale, Grubb and Johnson all have played at least one match at both of the bottom two flights during that time. In Vegas, Grubb played at the fifth flight and Easdale at the sixth against both Houston and Kansas.
The Falcons are 1-2 in home matches, 3-1 on the road and 0-2 in neutral-site contests this season to date. All three home dates, as mentioned, have taken place in Perrysburg.
Northern Illinois, after winning just two matches during all of last season, has more than tripled that total this year. Head coach Ryun Ferrell's team is 7-5 in dual-match play, heading into a Friday match at Western Michigan. Most recently, the Huskies lost to 11-1 Embry-Riddle last week (March 16) on the team's trip to Florida. That match came two days after Northern has snapped Bethune-Cookman's 10-match winning streak with a 5-2 verdict. Last year, the Huskies went 2-17 overall and 0-8 in MAC play.
The Falcons were 15-8 overall a year ago, and Dean's club finished with a 5-3 MAC mark. The Brown and Orange placed fourth in the nine-team league last fall. This season, the Falcons were picked to finish fifth in the league in the preseason coaches poll.
The Falcons lead Northern Illinois, 12-11, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has captured the last seven matches. Last season's meeting saw the Falcons down Northern Illinois, 7-0, in DeKalb, Ill., in the final regular-season match for both teams (April 23, 2011).
Two years ago, in the teams' last matchup in Northwest Ohio, the Falcons posted a 5-2 victory at the PTC (April 16, 2010). NIU's last win over BGSU came at the old Keefe Courts in April of 2004.
Following the NIU match, the Falcons will host a pair of conference duals next weekend. BGSU will face Buffalo on Friday (March 30) before meeting defending MAC champion Akron the following afternoon (Saturday, March 31).
