Falcons Comeback Falls Short Against Yale
March 08, 2012 | Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball team made a valiant comeback on Thursday afternoon, but dropped their ninth game of the season by an 11-9 score to Yale. The Bulldogs led 11-0 after six innings, but the Falcons would score three runs in each of the final three innings to make the final margin just two. With the loss the Falcons drop their season mark to 3-9.
Junior Cody Apthorpe started on the mound for the Falcons, laboring through two-plus innings. The defense did not help Apthorpe out, committing four errors while he was on the bump, leading to four of six runs being unearned. Patrick Martin relieved Apthorpe, going 3.1 innings in long relief. He would run out of gas in his fourth inning in relief, allowing four runs in the inning. Trevor Blaylock would relieve Martin, but by the end of the sixth, the Bulldogs of Yale led 11-0.
The Falcons would start their comeback in the top of the seventh, with Patrick Lancaster leading off with a walk. After a Bien strikeout, and Lancaster advancing to second via a wild pitch, Jake Thomas would walk. With two outs, Brandon Howard would single on the infield, as the ball took a nasty hop on the shortstop, and he was not able to throw Howard out. T.J. Losby would then double over the leftfielders head to score two more runs, and make the score 11-3 after the seventh.
Jeremy Shay would lead off the eighth with a single, which was followed by an error on the Bulldog shortstop, allowing Matt Pitzulo to reach on the play. Lancaster, Thomas, and Howard would all single in the inning. Logan Walker getting down the line to beat out a double play would allow the Falcons to score their sixth run of the game, making it 11-6 following the eighth.
The Falcons would still have some work to do heading into the ninth, after Chris Miller shut the Bulldogs down in the home half of the eighth. Alex Davison and Jeremy Shay would lead off the ninth with back-to-back singles to put the pressure on Yale. After stolen bases by Davison and Shay, the next batter, Matt Pitzulo, would hit a comebacker to the mound that the pitcher knocked down, and was able to get Jeremy Shay in a run-down for the first out. Patrick Lancaster would follow that with a high chop to the pitcher, which would advance Pitzulo to second, and score Davison, making it 11-7. A Brian Bien single would put runners on the corners for the top of the order. Jake Thomas would double to left-centerfield, scoring two and making it 11-9. Yale would then go to closer Kevin Fortunato for the final out of the game.
On the afternoon, the Falcons would score nine runs on 15 hits, while committing four errors. The Bulldogs scored 11 runs on 11 hits while committing just two errors. The Falcons will take the field tomorrow morning at 10 am against the Bradley Braves.
