BGSU Is a Powerful Voice (More Than One, Actually) in the Hockey World

Former Falcons Mills, Nieves each earn league broadcasting honors
Mike 'Doc' Emrick, a Bowling Green State University alumnus, was at the center of the action during the recently-concluded NHL playoffs, as the lead announcer for NBC's coverage. But, Emrick is certainly not the only award-winning hockey broadcaster with BGSU ties.
Two former Falcon radio voices, Bob Mills and Daniel Nieves, were recently recognized by their respective leagues. Mills was named the East Coast Hockey League's Broadcaster of the Year for the 2011-12 season, while Nieves earned the same honor for the Central Hockey League.
Mills spent the '11-12 campaign as the Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting for the Chicago Express of the ECHL, during the team's inaugural (and as it turned out, only) season. He came to the Express after serving stints with a pair of other ECHL clubs, the Bakersfield Condors in 2010-11 and the Gwinnett Gladiators in '09-10.
"I'm extremely honored to be recognized for this award by my peers," said Mills. "Bowling Green provided an unbelievable environment for the development of my skills, and set a strong groundwork for all the broadcasting aspects I use on a game-to-game basis. The value of getting to be on the air, calling D-I hockey games as a freshman cannot be overstated.
"I highly doubt I ever would have been in a position to earn this award without the experience I gained as a member of the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization (BGRSO) and student at BGSU."
Mills earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunications from BGSU in 2009. After serving as color commentator for Falcon hockey for three years, he took over the full-time play-by-play duties during his senior season.
Nieves, the Media Relations Director/Broadcaster for the Rapid City Rush, was named the CHL's Broadcaster of the Year. Nieves has been the 'voice' of the Rush and has covered every game since the team's inaugural season in 2008, including a successful championship run in 2010 and the 2011 CHL All-Star Game.
The Miami, Florida native is also a member of the RUSH Foundation and continues to serve the community through numerous other avenues. He broadcast Falcon hockey during the 2007-08 season and received a BA degree in telecommunications from BGSU in 2008.
"'I'm extremely thrilled that Millsy and I received our awards in the same year," said Nieves. "It's a phrase that is often overused, but BGSU and BGRSO truly laid the foundation for my entire career. To graduate with well over 50 professionally produced games under my belt gave me a huge advantage for my first job.
"I hope prospective students, specifically sportscasters, realize that Bowling Green is a premier university. I am very proud to be a BGSU grad and BGRSO member, and no matter where my career takes me, I'll always be a Falcon first and foremost.”
Both Mills and Nieves, not surprisingly, were part of the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization (BGRSO) while they attended BGSU. More information on the organization can be found at BGRSO.org.
