Falcons Head To Michigan For Simmons-Harvey Invitational

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green track and field team heads to the University of Michigan Saturday to compete in the annual Red Simmons / Jack Harvey Invitational. Field events are tentatively scheduled to begin at the U-M Indoor Track Building at 10:30 a.m. and running events will begin at 12:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
BGSU hosted the Bowling Green Opener this past Saturday and the Falcons placed a competitive fourth out of five teams. Brooke Pleger continued her domination in the weight throw, remaining undefeated on the year by winning the event with a personal best toss of 61-feet-7. Brittany Sinclair, competing for the Falcons for the first time, placed third in the 400 and helped the team to a second place finish in the 1600 relay at 3:56.15. Redshirt freshmen Andrea Alt and Jasmine Redman ran strong races in the 3000, placing second and third respectively.
PERSONAL BESTS
In Bowling Green's season-opening meet, the Falcons set or tied 23 personal records at the Eagle Holiday Meet. Following that meet, the team set or tied 21 personal bests in the Bowling Green Opener this past weekend.
NEW FACES
Second-year head coach Lou Snelling announced the addition of two new assistant coach in October. James Gildon works primarily with the team's jump, sprint and hurdle groups, while McKayla Plank assists with both the cross country and track and field programs. Gildon comes to BGSU after serving as an assistant coach at Fort Hayes State University, while Plank was a standout distance runner at Georgia.

YOUTH MOVEMENT
Currently, BGSU is ranked in the top 20 in the MAC in an event 14 times. Those 14 student-athletes represent three juniors, two redshirt sophomores, two true sophomores, four redshirt freshmen and three true freshmen. In all, 11 of the 14 ranked student-athletes are freshmen or sophomores and none are seniors.
PLEGER REMAINS UNBEATEN
Sophomore Brook Pleger opened the indoor track season by setting a personal best in the weight throw with a toss of 59-feet-8.25 to win the Eagles Holiday Meet and meet the automatic qualifying mark for the Indoor MAC Championships. She followed that up by winning the Bowling Green Opener and setting another personal best with a toss of 61-7. She currently ranks among the top 30 in the country in the weight throw and is tied for second in the MAC.
SINCLAIR MAKES A SPLASH
After spending two years at Duquesne and placing 16th in the 400 in the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, Brittany Sinclair transferred to Bowling Green. Competing in Brown and Orange for the first time, Sinclair posted a time of 57.49 in the 400 at the Bowling Green Opener. Her time is good enough to rank seventh in the MAC currently.
GATES LEAPS TO SUCCESS
Dana Gates is another transfer making an immediate impact at Bowling Green. After spending two years at Barton Community College and placing second in the long jump at the 2012 NJCAA Indoor National Championships, she has gotten off to a strong start in her BGSU career. Gates ranks 17th in the MAC in both the long jump and the triple jump with plenty of room for improvement yet. Her best long jump so far at BGSU is 17-feet-4.75, almost a foot shy of her leap of 18-4 at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships a year ago.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
The BGSU track and field team has been named a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for each of the past six years. The Falcons had a 3.24 combined grade point average to earn the award in 2012, fifth-best among MAC schools.
