Baseball Celebrates 2013 MAC Championship With Banquet

The Bowling Green State University baseball team held their banquet on Sunday afternoon, celebrating the 2013 team's many accomplishments. Among them were the 2013 MAC Tournament Championship, the 2013 NCAA Tournament Louisville Regional, and head coach Danny Schmitz's 600th win on April 20, 2013 against Akron. Academic and team awards were also announced.
The banquet was held at the Stroh Center, and inlcuded over 150 attendees ranging from players to family, friends, coaches, and staff. After dinner, guests enjoyed a highlight video of the 2013 season before awards were handed out.
Game balls were first passed out. A game ball is a BGSU tradition that a team member receives for their first career hit, win, or save as a Falcon. Next, eight freshman from the 2013 season received their varsity jackets. Devin Daugherty, Nick Glanzman, Brett Fitzwater, Tyler Greiner, Matt Smith, Rob Zenas, Aaron Loconsole, and Trey Keegan all received their orange and brown varsity jacket.
After the academic awards had been given out, in which 22 of 32 team members were honored for achieving over a 3.0 GPA last season, team awards were then announced. The list of award winners is below:
Scholar-Athlete Award: Andrew Kubuski (4.0 GPA in both semesters last season)
Comeback Player of the Year: Cody Apthorpe and Mike Frank
Mr. Versatility: Jeremy Shay
Coaches' Award: T.J. Losby
Fireman's Award (Best bullpen arm): Ethan McKenney and Nick Bruns
Golden Glove: Andrew Kubuski
Mr. Hustle / Aaron Lawniczak Award: Patrick Lancaster
Freshman of the Year / Don Woods Award: Nick Glanzman
Mr. Falcon / Ken Schoeni Award: Cody Apthorpe
Most Valuable Pitcher: Mike Frank and Nick Bruns
Most Valuable Player: Jeremy Shay and T.J. Losby
Next, the championship rings and special gifts were handed out. Each player, in addition to their ring, received a personalized Louisville Slugger bat commemorating the run to the NCAA Tournament's Louisville Regional. Each member of the team also received a team photo and ball signed by every member of the team.
The Falcons begin the 2014 season on February 14, when they travel to Belmont for a three-game, weekend series.
