Falcons Win Seven Events At Oakland
November 08, 2013 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Rochester, Mich. – The Bowling Green swimming team won seven events and set season-best times in five, but the Falcons were unable to defeat Oakland in a 150-130 loss Friday afternoon at the OU Aquatic Center.
BGSU gave up 18 points in the diving events and that deficit was too much to overcome against 5-1 Oakland. The Falcons drop to 1-3 on the season with the defeat.
"We saw more improvements with racing strategy today as well as some technical things," BGSU Head Coach Petra Martin said. "This week was very important for us training-wise. We went pretty heavy and it showed a bit today as we didn't have much lightness in our legs, but it is important for us to stick with the training cycles that are geared towards the end of the year. I felt that overall we were holding up and fighting well through tiredness."
Freshman Victoria Griffin, the reigning Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week, continued to thrive, remaining unbeaten in the 100 and 200 freestyle. She improved to 4-0 in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 51.04 seconds and moved to 3-0 in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.81. She was also part of the 400 freestyle relay team, along with Brittany Szekely, Hannah Newman and Joëlle Scheps, that set a season-best time of 3:29.69 to win.
Scheps cruised to a pair of victories as well, winning the 100 butterfly in 57.69 and the 200 individual medley in 2:07.37. Jordan Bullock added a win in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:06.50 and Szekely won the 50 freestyle in 24:12. Griffin was second in that event in 24.33.
Although Emily Waller finished third in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle, she set team season-best times in both events, finishing the 500 in 5:10.01 and the 1000 in 10:36.90.
BGSU now has two weeks off before competing in the Northwestern Tyr Invitational Nov. 22-24 and the Falcons will not compete in another dual meet until swimming at Michigan State Jan. 17.
"We have the next weekend off," Martin said. "After that, we are looking forward to racing at Northwestern, where the team will get the opportunity to lighten up the workload a little bit and see where we are halfway through the season on a bit of rest."
