Checking Up On The Cardinals
Ball State will enter the game with a record of 14-14 (4-5 MAC). The Cardinals have been an early surprise in the Mid-American Conference, after finishing last season with a record of just 14-36. Ball State has a .262 batting average overall, while improving it to .266 in conference games. Ball State has a 3.86 ERA, good for second in the league. Ball State has had a solid year defensively, but have struggled since MAC play started, committing 19 errors in the first nine contests.
The Coaching Matchup
Danny Schmitz and Rich Maloney enter the midweek matchup with a combined 1,205 wins, standing as the top two active coaches in the Mid-American Conference. Schmitz comes in with 595 victories, this his 23rd season at the helm of Bowling Green. Maloney enters the contest with 610 wins in his career, coaching in his second stint at Ball State. Between his two different stints at Ball State, Maloney was the skipper of the Michigan Wolverines.

Freshman Brett Fitzwater will oppose junior T.J. Weir on the mound to begin Tuesday's game. Fitzwater is making his fourth start of the season, entering with a 1-2 record and an ERA of 6.57. In his first collegiate appearance, Fitzwater picked up the victory at Western Kentucky. Weir is making his first start of the season, coming in with a 1-1 record in eight prior appearances.
