MUNCIE, Ind.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team picked up a much-needed win on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Mid-American Conference foe Ball State on the road. The Falcons were able to hang on for the 7-5 win in non-conference action, improving their overall record to 8-19 on the season.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Falcons would respond in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own. The Falcons would not collect a hit in the inning, but would take advantage of some BSU mistakes to cross home plate twice.
BSU responded quickly in the home half with two wind-aided extra base hits to plate three runs and retake the lead, at 4-2.
The Falcons would tie the game at four in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on two RBI groundouts. In the top of the seventh, the Falcons would string five-straight base hits together, scoring three runs and taking a 7-4 lead. Jesse Rait, Patrick Lancaster, and T.J. Losby served up the key RBI singles in the inning.
Ball State would add a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, but senior closer Nick Bruns would slam the door for his fourth save of the season.
Ethan McKenney was awarded with the win, going 1.2 innings and striking out two batters.
With the victory, head coach Danny Schmitz now stands at 596 career victories, just four away from the 600-win milestone. With the save, Nick Bruns (13 career) creeps closer to the all-time saves record, just four shy of the mark set by Neil Schmitz (17 career) from 2001-04.
The Falcons will be back in action this weekend in a crucial MAC matchup at Toledo. First pitch on Friday will be at 3 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday will both begin at 1 p.m.
