HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday (Oct. 18) night, defeating the Chargers by a score of 4-1. Playing in front of 1,432 fans at the Von Braun Center, sophomore Kevin Dufour scored two goals –marking his fifth and sixth goals on the season –, while Tomas Sholl (2-0-0) turned away 19-of-20 shots.
"We came down here with a plan to win two games and we did just that," head coach Chris Bergeron said. "We were able to execute that plan."
Opening league play for the 2014-15 campaign, the Falcons outshot the Chargers 17-8 and scored three goals in the second period to propel the Orange and Brown to four points in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) standings.
"Getting four points this weekend was huge and will be big points down the stretch of the season," Dufour said.
Both teams put on a tough, grind-out performance in the opening act of the game. Despite outshooting the Chargers, 15-7, in the period, the Falcons were unable to score in the opening 20 minutes.
Regardless of holding UAH to seven shots in the period, Sholl made several spectacular saves to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 throughout the opening frame. UAH's sophomore forward Matt Salhany had a breakaway opportunity with 8:41 remaining in the period, but Sholl's diving save prevented a Charger goal.
"I thought Tomas (Sholl) fought the puck real hard tonight," Bergeron said. "He got the win and played well tonight."
Still scoreless in the period, Sholl made another remarkable save with 3:26 left in the opening period. UAH worked the puck around the boards on a power play, and eventually worked the puck to the far side. The Chargers quickly fired a shot towards the net, but Sholl stuck his left leg up in the air while falling to the ground to keep the game scoreless.
"You don't really think about it as it happens," Sholl said. "I take one shot at and time and tonight I made some saves to keep us in the game."
Bowling Green finally broke the scoreless drought, netting a power-play goal just 2:39 into the second period. The Falcons worked the puck into their offensive zone and Murphy sent a quick pass to the right circle where Hawkins quickly fired his first initial shot. The puck rebounded off of Larose's chest and rebounded directly back to Hawkins, who then again fired and found the back of the net.
The goal was Hawkins second in as many days, and now has two goals and three assists for five points for the season to lead all freshmen.
The Falcons continued their momentum with another goal at the 8:13 mark at even strength, coming off the stick of freshman forward Jakob Reichert. After Bowling Green forced a turnover, freshman colleague Mitch McLain sent a pass to Reichert. The Langley, British Columbia native capitalized on a breakaway opportunity. Reichert moved the puck quickly from his forehand to his backhand in front of the crease and sent the puck to the back of the net, marking his first collegiate goal of his career.
Leading 2-0, Dufour scored the final two goals for the Orange and Brown. The Quebec City native now has a WCHA-leading six goals. The left-handed winger also ranks fourth in the NCAA, averaging 1.50 goals-per-game.
"I try to keep my game simple and I've been finding ways to help contribute offensively," Dufour said.
For the series, the Falcons outshot UAH by a commanding 88-37 margin. Bowling Green also went 4-for-12 (33.3%) on the power play and a perfect 9-for-9 on the penalty kill.
"We are still learning on how to finish games and ultimately we are happy with the weekend," Bergeron said."
Bowling Green will be back on the road next weekend (Oct. 24-25), taking on the Golden Knights of Clarkson in a non-conference weekend series. The Falcons last took on Clarkson Oct. 16, 2010 in a 3-0 win. The Golden Knights lead the all-time series 12-14-1.
