October 27, 2014 | Ice Hockey
Mitch McLain led the Falcons with three points over the past weekend against Clarkson University, helping the Orange and Brown go 1-0-1 to extend their unbeaten streak to four games. McLain also recorded a team-best plus-3 rating throughout the weekend.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Mitch McLain was rewarded for his strong play over the weekend as he was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Rookie Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
McLain tallied two goals, one assist and a team-high plus-3 rating as Bowling Green went 1-0-1 in a non-conference series at Clarkson. His strike at the 11:31 mark of the second period Friday night erased a 2-1 deficit as Bowling Green skated to a 2-2 tie. McLain played a key role in Saturday night's 5-4 victory, helping the Falcons score twice in a 3:34 span of the first period. The freshman from Baxter, Minn. scored at the 14:12 mark and picked up an assist on fellow rookie Tyler Spezia's goal at 17:46.
Junior forward Bryce Gervais of Minnesota State was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Gervais had a three-goal weekend, including the game-winning strikes on consecutive nights, to lift then-No. 13/12 Minnesota State to a WCHA series sweep over visiting Alabama Huntsville. The junior from Battleford, Saskatchewan converted on a power play at 3:31 of the third period in a 3-1 victory Friday night, before tallying two more goals – including a short-handed strike – in Saturday's 4-1 triumph. Gervais is tied for seventh nationally with four goals overall this season.
Meanwhile, junior goaltender Jamie Phillips of Michigan Tech was tabbed WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Phillips turned in an impressive performance in a hostile environment, stopping 67 of 68 shots faced as he backstopped Michigan Tech to a WCHA series sweep at then-No. 8/7 Ferris State. The Winnipeg Jets draft pick recorded his second career shutout with 33 saves in a 1-0 win on Friday night. The next night, the junior from Caledonia, Ontario made 34 stops en route to a 2-1 triumph. One of six undefeated goalies in the country, Phillips ranks sixth nationally with a 1.25 goals against average and .954 save percentage.
Bowling Green will return to the BGSU Ice Arena next weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 1), playing host to Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) foe No. 13 Minnesota State. The weekend's matchup will be the first since the two teams went toe-to-toe in last year's WCHA Final Five semifinal matchup at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Puck is schedule to drop at 7:07 p.m
