BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Sophomore netminder Tommy Burke was rewarded for his strong play over the weekend as he was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Burke backstopped Bowling Green to its first sweep of University of Alaska in Fairbanks since the 1995-96 season over the weekend. The Chaska, Minnesota native turned away 62-of-66 shots (.939), posting 26 saves in a 3-2 victory Friday (Nov. 7) evening and a season-high 36 stops in a 3-2 triumph Saturday (Nov. 8) night. Burke, who picked up his third-straight victory and now sits at 3-1-1 on the season, turned in his best performance on Saturday night. Leading by one entering the third period, the junior netminder stopped all 17 shots Alaska fired his way, helping the Orange and Brown to a weekend-sweep of the Nanooks. For the season, Burke has logged 303:59 between the pipes with a 1.97 goals-against-average and a .933 save percentage.
Junior forward Teddy Blueger of Minnesota State was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Blueger tallied five points on four goals, including the first shorthanded goal of his career. The junior registered a hat trick, his first of his carer, in the Mavericks' 5-3 victory on Saturday, while recording a goal and assist on Friday in Minnesota State's 6-3 victory. The Pittsburgh Penguins' draft pick is tied for eighth nationally with six goals on the season.
Meanwhile, forward Brennan Saulnier was tabbed WCHA Rookie of the Week. The freshman recorded two assists for the first time in his collegiate career Friday night, aiding Alabama Huntsville to a 4-2 win at Air Force. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native assisted on UAH's first goal of the game to tie the contest at 1-1, then played a part in the game-winning goal as the Chargers earned their first victory of the season. Sauliner totaled five shots, one block and a plus-one rating on the weekend as UAH went 1-0-1 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend (Nov. 14-15) for a home-and-home, non-conference series with Ohio State. The Orange and Brown will host the Buckeyes on Friday, Nov. 14 at 8:07 p.m. before heading south to play in the second game of the two-game series at the Value City Arena.
