Falcons Meet West Virginia in MAC Tourney Semifinal

Third-seeded BGSU takes on the second-seeded Mountaineers Friday in Akron
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, after posting four consecutive wins to end the regular season, now prepares for the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols, seeded third for the four-team tourney, will face second-seeded West Virginia University in the semifinal round on Friday afternoon (Nov. 14). The match will begin at 4:00 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in Akron, Ohio.
The other semifinal will pit the top-seeded University of Akron against the fourth seed, Western Michigan University. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two semifinal-round winners will advance to Sunday's (Nov. 16) championship match, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. UA, as the regular-season champion, earned the right to host the conference tourney.

LAST WEEK
The Falcons captured a pair of 2-1 matches during the final week of the regular season. On Tuesday night (Nov. 4), sophomore Jacob Roth converted a pair of penalty kicks, with the second coming in the 100th minute, as BGSU downed Wright State, 2-1, at Cochrane Field. The win, BGSU's third OT victory in a row, allowed the Falcons to maintain possession of the I-75 Cup that goes to the winner of the BG-WSU match. Redshirt soph Nick Landsberger made a career-high seven saves as BG picked up the win despite playing without five starters.
On Saturday (Nov. 8), a pair of Naperville, Ill., natives scored first-half goals in their home state as BG topped Northern Illinois by a 2-1 final, clinching a MAC Tournament berth in the process. Sophomore Joe Sullivan and redshirt soph Max Auden scored goals five minutes apart, and Landsberger (also an Illinois native) and the BG defense allowed a second-half goal, but kept the Huskies at bay thereafter.
THE FALCONS IN THE MAC TOURNAMENT
>> BGSU enters Friday's match with an overall record of 17-14-0 in the MAC Tournament. The Falcons are 8-6-0 in neutral-site tourney matches through the years, and BGSU is 8-4-0 in the semifinal round heading into the WVU match.
>> BG qualified for the MAC Tournament in each of the first 15 years in which it was held (1994-2008), and also advanced to the tourney in 2010 and 2012. The Falcons were 6-5-0 in the quarterfinals (a quarterfinal round is no longer held) and are 3-5-0 in the championship round. BG is 3-6-0 in league tourney matches in Akron, Ohio.
>> BGSU won three-straight league tourney titles from 1995-97 under coach Mel Mahler. That was part of a run in which the Brown and Orange advanced to the championship match in five consecutive seasons between 1994 and '98. BGSU IN THE RPI
The Falcons were ranked 69th of 205 schools in the latest NCAA Men's Soccer RPI, released Sunday night (Nov. 9) by the NCAA office. Friday's opponent, West Virginia, is ranked 35th. The other two MAC Tournament participants, Akron and Western Michigan, are ranked 27th and 95th, respectively.
FALCONS PICKED TO PLACE FIFTH
The Falcons were picked to finish fifth in the MAC standings in 2014, according to the preseason coaches' poll, but BGSU wound up in a third-place tie in the final standings. The poll was the result of voting by the league's six head coaches. The complete poll, with the teams' actual finishes, follows.

ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU is 13-5-1 overall, and the Falcons finished the regular season with a MAC record of 2-2-1.The Falcons were 6-2-1 in home matches, and BG is 6-3 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site contests to date. BGSU has outscored opponents by a 34-16 margin.
Sophomore Pat Flynn leads the Falcons with 13 goals and 29 points, and ranks fifth or better in the entire nation in both categories. Flynn also has three assists, and six of his goals have been game winners. He is ranked 12th or better in the country in five individual categories.
Sophomore Joe Sullivan has 15 points on the year, with five goals and five assists, while classmate Jacob Roth has 14 points and redshirt sophomore Max Auden 13. Roth has three goals and a team-leading eight assists, while Auden is tied with Sullivan for second on the Falcons in goals, with five. Sullivan, Roth and Auden each have two GWG this fall.
Senior Danny Baraldi rounds out the Falcons' quintet of double-digit scorers, with 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists. Freshman Brad Macomber has scored six points in his initial season with the Falcons, while junior Ryan James has five.
In goal, redshirt sophomore Nick Landsberger has seen action in 13 games, while classmate Ryan Heuton has played in nine matches. Heuton has four complete-match shutouts, 38 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.48. Landsberger has three shutouts, 36 stops and a 1.04 GAA. Both 'keepers have saved a penalty kick this season, with Heuton's – coming in overtime vs. Western Michigan (Nov. 1) – keeping BG's MAC Tournament hopes alive.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff lost 10 seniors off of last year's team, which went 6-7-6 overall and 2-2-2 in MAC play and tied for fourth in the conference.
A total of six players have started all 17 matches for Nichols and his staff this fall. That group includes Auden, Flynn, James, Roth, senior Jon Kumher and and junior Jake Genrich. Sullivan has made 18 starts, while seniors Vlad Lekarev and Baraldi have started 17 and 16 matches, respectively.
FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• For the first time in over a decade, BGSU will finish with a winning record. The Falcons last finished above .500 in 2000, when BG went 9-8-1 overall.
• The Falcons' total of 13 wins is the program's highest in 17 years. No BGSU team has won as many as 13 matches since the 1997 Falcons went 18-6-0 en route to a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
• BGSU has more than doubled last season's win total. The 2013 Falcons went 6-7-6.
• BGSU has won a season-high four-straight games heading into the MAC Tournament. In fact, BG's four-game winning streak is the program's longest since the '97 team won 11 games in a row.

• The Falcons are 4-1-1 in overtime matches this season. BG's total of four OT wins ties the school record set 30 years ago. The 1984 team went 4-2-2 in overtime matches.
CHART-TOPPERS
The Falcons are well represented in the latest NCAA Division I statistical rankings, released Monday (Nov. 10). BGSU is ranked among the top 35 teams in the nation in 10 of the 11 categories kept by the NCAA, while sophomore Pat Flynn is ranked 12th or better in the country on five total lists. Flynn is third in the country in total goals and game-winning goals, fifth in total points, ninth in goals per game and 12th in points per game.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
West Virginia enters Friday's match with an overall record of 11-6-1, and the Mountaineers finished in second place in the MAC with a 3-1-1 league record. WVU won five-straight matches to end the regular season, including MAC wins over BGSU, Buffalo and Western Michigan. The Mountaineers are 7-2 at home and 4-4-1 on the road this fall. Friday will be the team's first neutral-site match. Senior Andy Bevin paces WVU in scoring, with 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists. Junior Jamie Merriam has eight goals and 21 points, while junior Ryan Cain and freshman Jad Arslan have 11 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Lee Johnston has played in 11 matches in goal, and has four shutouts, 29 saves and a 1.21 GAA. Sophomore Brent Arnold has made eight appearances, with two shutouts, 24 stops and a GAA of 1.42. Head coach Marlon LeBlanc returned 16 letterwinners, including nine starters, from a 2013 team that went 7-7-5 overall and 2-2-2 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads West Virginia, 3-2-2, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Mountaineers are unbeaten in the last three meetings. In this year's first matchup, host WVU got a late goal for a 2-1 victory. Last year, also in Morgantown, the teams played to a 3-3 draw on the last night of the regular season. The teams have gone to overtime in four of the first seven meetings. BGSU is 1-1-0 at home, 0-1-1 on the road and 2-0-1 at neutral sites vs. WVU through the years. Friday will be the teams' first MAC Tournament meeting.
BUILD FROM THE BACK
Slowly but surely, the Falcons have improved defensively during the Eric Nichols Era. BGSU's totals/averages in a multitude of categories have gotten better in nearly every season since Nichols took over in 2009. Last year, the Falcon defense ranked 26th in the nation in saves pct., 33rd in the country in goals-against average and 36th in NCAA Division I in shutout pct. This season to date, the Falcons are ranked 35th or better in each of those categories. And, the 2014 team ranks 17th in the country on another rather important list: winning percentage. UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
The winner of the BGSU-WVU match will advance to the MAC Tournament championship match to face either Akron or Western Michigan. The championship is set for Sunday (Nov. 16) at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
The winner of the BGSU-WVU match will advance to the MAC Tournament championship match to face either Akron or Western Michigan. The championship is set for Sunday (Nov. 16) at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
