Falcons Impress During Intrasquad Meet
November 21, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University track and field team kicked off the 2014-15 indoor season with the annual Orange vs. Brown meet Friday evening at Perry Fieldhouse on the campus of BGSU. For the third consecutive year, Team Orange won the meet, posting a 47-44 victory. Over the course of the 10-event meet, a number of performances raised eyebrows for the upcoming season.
"We saw some things out of this program that we haven't seen since I've been here and that was exciting," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "We're in a pretty good place. It was nice to see how well-rounded we are becoming – in all different events. It's a great opportunity to figure out a lot of this."
The drama started with the very first event as sophomore Raven Porter and senior Krystin Reiser battled toe-to-toe in the high jump. Neither missed on the first four heights and both eventually surpassed 5-foot-5. Porter was able to clear 5-6.5 to win the event, a mark that surpassed her personal best from a year ago.
Freshman Cassandra Boyle followed by winning the mile and junior Alicia Arnold posted a solid win in the 60. Natalie Sommerville then edged out Connor Kempf to win the 600.
In the shot put, redshirt freshman Aliyah Gustafson opened eyes by edging out sophomore Makenzie Wheat, who qualified for NCAA Regionals during the outdoor season in the event. Gustafson threw 49-4 (50.06m) to get the win, a mark that should put her in solid position for regionals this year.
Freshman Kyla Paster then put together arguably the most impressive effort of the night, winning the triple jump with a leap of 39-10. That distance would have placed third at the MAC Championships last year.
In the 3000, redshirt junior Jasmine Redman and redshirt sophomore Mackenzie McMillin both recorded times that would have qualified them for the MAC Championships with Redman getting the victory Friday evening.
The first of the relays followed with the team of sophomore Brianna Johnson, freshmen Cortisha Short and Dorresha Green, and senior Brittany Sinclair winning the 800 relay. Arnold then won her second event of the night, the long jump, before the final relay of the night. Junior Kera Lamotte, Short, Sommerville and Sinclair closed out the meet with a victory in the 1200 relay.
BGSU will have a couple more weeks before getting the season started at the Eagle Holiday Meet, hosted by Eastern Michigan, Dec. 5. The Falcons will then host the first of two home meets, the BG Opener, on Jan. 10.
