Chiricosta Ties School Record as Falcons Win at CSU

Senior moves into a tie for first on the BGSU career singles wins list

With the win, the Falcons improved to 4-1 in dual-match play this season, while dropping the Vikings to 1-6 on the year.
Chiricosta, a native of nearby Avon Lake, defeated CSU's Kara Sherwood at the top singles flight, for the 89th singles win of her Falcon career. She has moved into a tie for first place on that BG career list, matching the record set by her sister, Christine, three years ago.
Senior Emily Reuland and freshmen Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison each posted a pair of wins against the Vikings on Friday night, while Chiricosta and sophomores Katie Brozovich and Drew Fillis won one match apiece.
Fillis and Reuland teamed up for an 8-5 win over CSU's Alex Power and Princess Gbadamosi at the top doubles flight. The Falcons trailed early in that match, but won four-straight games to take a 6-3 lead and seize control.
At the third doubles flight, the Falcon freshman duo orchestrated an impressive comeback to give BG the initial point of the night. Drayton and Hutchison fell behind the Vikings' Mathilde Orange and Ellen Folkers by a 6-2 score, and CSU still had a 7-4 lead relatively late in that match. But, Drayton and Hutchison proceeded to win three-straight games, then capture a tiebreaker for a well-earned victory.
The Vikings won at the middle flight, where Sherwood and Alex Bush topped Brozovich and Chiricosta by an 8-5 count. It marked the first loss in five dual matches for that BGSU doubles team.
In singles, however, the first five singles matches to finish all went BG's way. After losing in doubles, Brozovich made quick work of Gbadamosi in singles play, losing a total of just three games at the third flight. Brozovich won the opening set by a 6-2 score, then dropped just in game in her second-set win.
Brozovich is now 5-0 in singles matches and 9-1 overall in dual-match play this season to date. In her career, she now has a singles record of 25-2 in dual matches.
Drayton led early and often against Folkers. The BG freshman won her first set by a 6-0 score at the sixth flight, and Drayton won the first three games of the second set. After Folkers attempted to mount a comeback by taking the next two games, Drayton again won three-straight games to close out the match.
At the fifth singles flight, Hutchison burst out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-3 opening-set win over Victoria Bensimon. The second set was somewhat closer, as Bensimon had early leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the first-year Falcon quickly retook the lead and went on to a 6-4 win. Hutchison's victory gave BGSU the required fourth point needed for victory.
Reuland led early in her second-flight matchup with Bush, then fell behind by a 3-2 score. But, the senior co-captain reeled off four-straight games for a 6-3 first-set win. In the second set, Bush took a 2-0 lead, and still led by a 4-3 count before Reuland again finished strong by winning the last three games for a 6-4 decision.
The top flight saw Chiricosta make history. Her opening set with Sherwood was a back-and-forth affair. Chiricosta won the opening match, but Sherwood forged leads of 3-2 and 4-3. The Falcons' senior won the next two games for a 5-4 lead, though, before Sherwood came back to tie the set at 6-6. Chiricosta took control in the tiebreaker, however, winning it by a 7-4 score to capture the set.
In the second set, Chiricosta lost only one early game en route to a 6-1 win, the 89th singles victory of her BGSU career.
The Vikings' lone point came at the fourth flight, where Orange eked out a pair of 7-5 sets against Fillis.
Chiricosta now has 176 overall wins at BGSU, ranking second on that list. She is just two total wins away from tying her sister's record for combined career wins.
Reuland is near the top of all three of BG's wins lists as well. She now has 155 overall wins to rank fourth in school history. Reuland has moved into a tie for fourth place on the singles wins list, with 79, and she is fifth in doubles victories, with 76.
The Falcons will be in action in Cincinnati next weekend, playing two matches in as many days. BGSU will take on Xavier University on Friday night (Feb. 21), before facing the University of Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22).
