AKRON, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed a weekend sweep over Akron on Sunday, defeating the host Zips by a final score of 8-1. The Falcons had 14 hits in Sunday's game, as they extended their win streak to four games. Bowling Green has now won 10-of-13 games, improving their overall record to 16-19. They are 8-7 in Mid-American Conference action with today's win.
Bowling Green scored 28 runs and pounded out 45 hits over the weekend in sweeping Akron, who came into the series as the MAC East Division leader. During their four-game winning streak, the Falcons have scored 45 runs and recorded 63 hits.
Andrew Lacinak earned the win on the mound for the Orange and Brown, tossing a career-high seven innings. He allowed just one run and six hits, striking out one. With the victory, the left-hander improved to 4-3 on the season.
The Falcons scored first in Sunday's game, getting to Akron starter Myles McVeigh for a first-inning run. With Jeremy Shay on first base with two outs, T.J. Losby would walk to put two Falcons on base. It looked like Akron had gotten out of the inning on a ground ball towards short, but UA shortstop Nick Rembielak would not be able to handle it, loading the bases for the Orange and Brown. The next pitch would go to the backstop, allowing Shay to score from the third and giving BGSU a 1-0 lead. The Falcons would leave the bases loaded in the inning.
Akron would even the score in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with nobody out on three straight singles to begin the frame. A pop out to second baseman Logan Walker would be the first out of the inning, but the Zips would tie things up with a sacrifice fly to center field. Similar to the Falcons, UA would leave the bases loaded in the second.
Bowling Green would break the game open with four runs in the top of the third, knocking McVeigh out of the game. Shay would begin the inning with a single, fighting off an 0-2 pitch through the right side and into the outfield. Shay would advance to second on a wild pitch and score on a single by Losby into center field.
Patrick Lancaster would continue the hit parade with a high chopper towards second base, beating the pitcher to first base for the infield single. With two runners on base, Brandon Howard would single to center field to score Losby from second. On the play, however, Akron center fielder Devin Ahart would misplay the ball, allowing it to get past him. Lancaster would score from first on the play to increase BGSU's lead to 4-1, and Howard would reach second on the error.
New pitcher Masashi Sakamoto would come into the game with Howard on second. The Falcon third baseman wouldn't stay for long, as he would steal third on the first pitch from Sakamoto and score on a throwing error by Akron catcher Brian Lees.
The Falcons would tack on two more runs in the sixth, as Jesse Rait singled to center to begin the inning. After an out, Jake Thomas would single to right. The ball would get by the Akron right fielder, though, allowing Rait to score and Thomas to get all the way to third. Shay would lift a sacrifice fly to deep center, allowing Thomas to score and increasing the lead to 6-1.
Like they did in both games of the series prior to Sunday, the Falcons would tack on an insurance run in the ninth inning. After a Howard two-out single, Walker would follow with a double into the left field corner allowing Howard to score all the way from first.
Tony Landi and Trevor Blaylock would each pitch a scoreless inning of relief in the game, shutting the door to preserve the 8-1 win.
Bowling Green will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Big Ten Conference foe Michigan for a midweek showdown with the Wolverines. First pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m.
