Pettigrew, Pleger Named MAC Athletes Of The Week
April 22, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University senior Jeanette Pettigrew was named the Mid-American Conference's Track Athlete of the Week and redshirt junior Brooke Pleger earned MAC Co-Field Athlete of the Week, as announced today by the league office.
Pettigrew broke her own school record in the 200 and added a personal best in the 100 at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. this week. She ran the 200 in 23.80 seconds, .08 faster than the school-record time she set earlier this year. That time is the second-fastest in the MAC this year. Pettigrew added a time of 11.84 in the 100, good for third in the MAC this year and the fourth-fastest time in BGSU history.
Pleger set a Kentucky Track and Field Complex facility record in the hammer throw at the Kentucky Relays, winning the event for the second consecutive week. Pleger threw 211-feet-5 to win by almost 20 feet over Kentucky's Beckie Famurewa and Louisville's Patrice Gates, both of whom are ranked among the top 50 in the country. Any of Pleger's three legal throws would have won the meet with room to spare. She currently ranks fourth in the country in the hammer throw and is unbeaten in competition this spring.
For Pettigrew, it marks the first time in her career that she has won the MAC weekly award. She is the first BGSU student-athlete outside of Pleger to be honored by the conference since April of 2008 and is the first runner in more than a decade to be recognized. Pleger earned the award for the second consecutive week. It is the sixth time in her career that she earned MAC Athlete of the Week honors – three times in outdoor a year ago, once in indoor during the past winter and twice during this year's outdoor season.
BGSU track and field, ranked No. 14 in the region, will compete at two meets this weekend. The Falcons will send throwers to the Ashland Alumni Open Friday and Saturday, while the rest of the team will compete at the Gina Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College, Thursday through Saturday.
