Friedman becomes first draft pick since 2009
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Incoming freshman Mark Friedman was selected in the third round of the National Hockey League Draft over the weekend by the Philadelphia Flyers. Friedman was taken with the 86th pick overall, the highest among four players taken with ties to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
"We are very excited for Mark and his family," head coach Chris Bergeron said. He has worked hard to get to this point in his career. Being drafted into the National Hockey League is a huge honor for him, and we are looking forward to him starting his Bowling Green career in the fall."
Friedman competed with Waterloo of the United States Hockey League last season, scoring 40 points in 51 games. A defenseman, Friedman tallied 10 goals and 30 assists. He is the first Falcon since 2009 to be selected in the NHL Draft, and the highest pick since Jonathan Matsumoto was taken with the 79th pick of the 2006 draft, also by the Flyers.
