Hockey Announces Team Captain and Assistants for 2014-15 Season

Dan DeSalvo will serve as Bowling Green's captain for the season. Adam Berkle, Mark Cooper and Brent Tate were tabbed as assistants for the Falcons.
Bowling Green, Ohio— The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team announced that senior forward Dan DeSalvo will serve as the team captain for the 2014-15 season, announced by head coach Chris Bergeron on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons have also named senior Adam Berkle, junior Mark Cooper, and junior Brent Tate as assistants for the upcoming season. All four players accumulated 41 goals and 55 assists for a combined 96 points in 2013-14 for the Orange and Brown.
DeSalvo is coming off his best season as a member of the Orange and Brown in 2013-14, leading the team in scoring with a career-high 32 points. The Rolling Meadows, Illinois native also tallied a career-best 25 assists, breaking his previous career-high of 20 helpers for the second straight season. DeSalvo was the first Falcon to tally at least 25 assists in one season for the first time in seven years. Over his first three seasons, DeSalvo has increased his assists totals in each of his first three years by tallying 11, 20, and 25 respectively. The forward also lit-the-lamp seven times last season, giving him an average of .82 points-per-game for the Bowling Green. In three seasons, DeSalvo has tallied 26 goals and 56 assists for 82 career points in 115 games, the most on the current roster.
Adam Berkle, a Collegeville, Pennsylvania native, played in 34 games for the Falcons in 2013-14. Berkle is coming off one his best seasons under Bergeron, scoring a career-high 10 goals. The forward also tallied 11 assists for 21 points, marking one of six Falcons to reach the 20-point plateau. Berkle also finished the season with a career-best plus-13 on-ice rating, ranking second on the team. In a season in which Berkle scored a career-high 10 goals, the forward lit-the-lamp on three different occasions while the Falcons were shorthanded, marking the first Falcon to tally three short-handed goals in a single season since 2008-09.
Mark Cooper was also tabbed as one of the three assistants for the Falcons. Cooper, a Toronto, Ontario, native, played in all 39 games in 2013-14 for the Orange and Brown. Cooper was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week twice, which was the most by a Falcon for the year. Cooper showcased his offensive skills throughout the season, highlighted by recording his first-ever three-goal hat trick against Minnesota State on Nov. 22, 2013, including the game-winning goal in overtime. The forward tallied a career-high 24 points, including a career-high 14 goals that led the team a season ago.
Senior forward Brent Tate, who hails from Canton, Michigan, was also named as an assistant captain for the Orange and Brown this season. Tate, who was limited last season due to injuries, will return to the ice looking to add onto his successful time while playing in 28 games for the Falcons in 2013-14. Tate still put up a career-high 10 goals and added nine assists, accumulating 19 points for the season. Tate also had a knack for game-winnings goals, ranking fourth on the team with two.
The Falcons will drop the puck for the first time this season on Saturday, Oct. 4 against Simon Fraser at the BGSU Ice Arena in an exhibition affair. Bowling Green will then turn their attention towards Miami University, as the Falcons will host the Redhawks for its season opener on Oct. 10 before wrapping up the home-and-home series on the road on Oct. 12.
