BGSU will take on Detroit on Friday evening (Jan. 23), with first serve set for 6:00 p.m. Then, on Sunday (Jan. 25), the Brown and Orange will meet Youngstown State in a 5:00 p.m. match at the PTC. Admission to all BGSU home tennis matches is free.
The UDM match on Friday will be Elkin's first dual match as the Falcons' head coach. She took over the BGSU program in August after two highly-successful seasons as head coach at Murray State University, where she was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2013-14.
Elkin and the Falcons have not played an opponent from another school in two-and-a-half months, since closing the fall portion of the schedule at the UC Invitational on Oct. 10-11. There have been several changes to the BGSU roster since that time.
Earlier this week, Stephanie Dalmacio was named assistant coach of the Falcons. Dalmacio was a tennis standout at Wichita State University, where she and Elkin were teammates for two years.
Additionally, sophomores Antonina Farrar and Leeah Floyd and freshman Sydney Seeley have joined the Falcon program. The nine-player roster features one junior (Drew Fillis), four sophomores (Farrar, Floyd, Harley Hutchison and Brittany Plaszewski) and four freshmen (Seeley, Meili Martin, Megan Miller and Emily Witt).
In addition to the UC Invitational, the Falcons also participated in the Miami Invitational (Sept. 12-13) and the team's own BGSU Invitational (Sept. 19-20) during the fall. Martin and Miller led the Falcons with seven overall victories apiece during the fall schedule, with Plaszewski picking up four wins and Hutchison and Witt two each.
Detroit enters the weekend with a record of 0-2 in dual matches. Last weekend, the Titans dropped a 7-0 decision at #20 Notre Dame, before falling, 5-2, at Ball State. Detroit crossed paths with the Falcons earlier this season, as coach Pjotrs Necajevs and the Titans took part in the BGSU Invitational. Sophomore Anna Davydova won the number-three singles flight title that weekend. A year ago, UDM went 11-8 overall and 5-3 in Horizon League regular-season play, and the Titans advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament for the eighth consecutive year. This year's team was picked to tie for fourth in the nine-team HL.
Youngstown State, like BGSU, opens the dual-match schedule this weekend. The Penguins host Duquesne on Friday evening before facing the Falcons in Perrysburg two evenings later. YSU participated in the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invitational, hosted by Pittsburgh, last weekend, and the Penguins played matches against the host school as well as West Virginia. YSU, like UDM, participated in the BGSU Invitational back in September, with senior Dominika Lackova and senior Marta Burak teaming up for a doubles title at the top flight. Youngstown was picked to win the 2015 Horizon League title in the preseason coaches' poll. Last year, coach Mickael Sopel's team went 14-12 overall and 6-2 in the HL. The Penguins, after finishing third in the regular-season standings, won the league tournament championship for the first time in program history.
BGSU holds a 7-1 lead in the all-time series with Detroit, and the teams are meeting in dual-match play for the first time in nearly four years. The last meeting was a 6-1 Falcon win on the road (Feb. 27, 2011). The teams' most recent meeting in Perrysburg was a 5-2 BG victory the previous year (Feb. 12, 2010). UDM's last victory over the Falcons came in February of 2009, a 4-3 decision in the Motor City. BG, down to five healthy players, forfeited at the sixth singles and third doubles flights in that '09 match.
The Falcons lead Youngstown State, 15-0, in that series, including a 13-0 mark at home. BGSU has posted 6-1 wins over the Penguins in Perrysburg in each of the last two years, including last year's dual-match opener (Jan. 26, 2014). BGSU swept the three doubles matches, then captured five of the six singles contests in each of those two duals. Sunday's match will be the teams' fourth meeting at the PTC, including a 7-0 win five years ago (Jan. 31, 2010) and the aforementioned two matches
Following this weekend's action, the Falcons will head to East Lansing, Mich., next Sunday (Feb. 1) to face Michigan State University. After two more road matches, vs. Marquette (Feb. 6) and Wisconsin (Feb. 7), BGSU will return to the PTC to meet Cleveland State (Feb. 13) and Cincinnati (Feb. 14) as the non-conference schedule rolls on.
