Sean Walker To Serve As Captain; Brent Tate, Mark Cooper Named Assistants

Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University ice hockey head coach Chris Bergeron named the team's captain and assistant captains for the 2015-2016 season Friday. This season's captain will be Sean Walker, a junior defenseman from Keswick, Ontario, Canada. Mark Cooper and Brent Tate have been tabbed to serve as the team's assistant captains. Both players are in the roles for the second consecutive year.
Walker completed an outstanding 2014-15 season in just his second year with the Falcons. He earned the team's Jim Ruehl Best Defensive Player award, as he blocked 35 shots and owned a +10 on-ice rating, which ranked second among all BGSU players. He played in all 39 games and notched 20 points, including five goals. Walker accounted for two goals and three assists on successful power plays. He assisted on two goals in BGSU's series-clinching 4-1 victory over Northern Michigan in the WCHA Tournament First Round and scored a go-ahead goal in the team's 3-2 November win at Ohio State. Career-wise, Walker now owns a +19 on-ice rating and has scored 33 points in 77 games.
Cooper enters his senior season with the Falcons in 2015-2016 and hails from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has played in all 78 games during BGSU's last two seasons and accumulated 43 points during that span. As a junior, Cooper posted six goals and 13 assists for a total of 19 points, five of which occurred on the power play. During the Falcons' final five games, he totaled six points, including three during postseason play. He forced overtime in game one of the WCHA Tournament First Round by scoring against Northern Michigan with 84 seconds left. The Falcons ultimately won that game and swept the series. Cooper now has 59 points and 28 goals during BGSU career.
Tate, a senior forward from Canton, Mich., played in 29 games last season and contributed 12 points for the Falcons. He was one of three BGSU players with a shot percentage above .200, as he scored nine goals in 43 attempts (.209). He was one of the best Falcons when tasked with taking the face-off, ranking fourth on the team with a success rate of .523 in 107 chances. Tate scored both goals during the Falcons' home game against Ohio State, which set a BGSU Ice Arena attendance record. During his career, Tate has a +6 on-ice rating and 44 points in 81 games.
Bowling Green will begin the sixth season of Bergeron's tenure Saturday with an exhibition game against Toronto. The regular season begins six days later in Columbus, Ohio against Ohio State. The Falcons play their regular season home opener and complete a home-and-home series with the Buckeyes on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7:37 pm.
