THANKS, SENIORS
Saturday's WVU match, as mentioned, will be 'Senior Day' for the BGSU men's soccer program. The Falcons' three seniors – Jake Genrich, Ryan James and Jake Martin – will be recognized in on-field ceremonies prior to the match. A quick look at each of the three seniors...Â
SENIOR DEFENDER JAKE GENRICH
A central defender, Genrich played in all 60 of BGSU's matches during his first three seasons, starting 59 of those 60 matches. He helped the Falcons post 23 shutouts in those three years, and helped the Brown and Orange keep two more clean sheets earlier this season. Genrich has missed eight matches this year, however, due to injuries. The Falcons are a perfect 5-0-0 this fall in matches when he has played at least 40 minutes. Entering Saturday's match, Genrich has played a total of 6,022 minutes in his BGSU career.
SENIOR MIDFIELDER RYAN JAMES
James, a midfielder, has been in the lineup since his arrival on campus, starting at least 13 games in all four seasons. James, like Genrich an All-MAC Second-Team selection last season, has played in all 74 of BG's matches over the last three-plus years, making 64 starts. He has 28 career points, including eight points on a pair of goals and four assists this season. James has scored four points on three career occasions, and has had two assists in three career matches, incluidng two this fall. James, who has played 5,790 career minutes at BGSU, was one of just 30 players named a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award.
SENIOR MIDFIELDER JAKE MARTIN
Martin, a central midfielder, is in his second year at BG after two standout seasons at nearby Owens CC. Last fall, he played in 12 matches, making 11 starts. He started nine of the first 10 games of the year, but missed a total of nine matches due to injuries. Martin returned to action in the final regular-season match, a win over Northern Illinois that clinched a MAC Tournament berth. He was back in the starting lineup for the league tourney, as the Falcons advanced to the championship match. This year, Martin has played in 11 matches, starting nine, and he has recorded a pair of assists. He has played nearly 1,800 total minutes as a Falcon.
#TBT: LAST YEAR AT THIS TIME...
Last October 23, the Falcons were reeling after their worst loss of the season, a 3-0 setback at Ohio State the night before. That gave the Brown and Orange a three-match winless streak heading into a match against ... West Virginia. One year (minus one day) prior to this year's regular-season matchup with the Mountaineers, the Falcons played well, but fell by a 2-1 count in Morgantown. Then, however, BGSU proceeded to win five-straight contests, including an overtime victory over WVU in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament. All five of those wins were by a single goal, with four of them coming in OT.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 6-7-1 on the season, and BGSU is looking to snap a seven-match winless streak after a 6-1-0 start to the year. Last week, the Brown and Orange lost a 3-0 decision at 16th-ranked Syracuse in midweek action (Oct. 13), then dropped a narrow 2-1 match at Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 17). Prior to the SU contest, BG saw three-straight matches go to overtime, including a loss to Ohio State (Oct. 7), when the Buckeyes scored with just three seconds left in the second OT. BG battled IUPUI to a 2-2, double-OT draw in Indianapolis nearly two weeks ago (Oct. 10).
• BG won the first five matches of the year before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). The Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW (Sept. 18), but BG fell by a 6-0 count at Dayton (Sept. 23), then lost back-to-back home games by 1-0 results, to Michigan State and Northern Illinois, prior to the OSU match. In addition to IPFW, the Falcons have defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State and Evansville this season. BGSU scored at least three goals in five of the season's six wins to date.
• BGSU is 5-2-0 at home, 0-4-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this season. The Falcons have been outscored by a 23-21 count this fall, but BG has scored 14 goals and allowed only six at Cochrane Stadium to date.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season, and he is ranked among the national scoring leaders. Joe Sullivan has 16 points on six goals and four assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two.
• Flynn has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in the Falcons' win over IPFW, and he was involved in the scoring of both goals at IUPUI, with a goal and an assist.
• Junior Jacob Roth has scored nine points, while senior Ryan James has eight. Roth converted a penalty kick in the WMU match Saturday, for his third goal this fall. He is a perfect 2-for-2 on PKs this season, and also has three assists. James has a pair of goals, and is tied with Flynn and Sullivan for second on the team with four assists. Redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman has five points this season, all coming via assists. He leads the Falcons in that category.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has started 12 of BGSU's 14 matches this season. He has a pair of shutouts, 32 saves and a goals-against average of 1.46. Redshirt junior Nick Landsberger has made two starts, with complete-match efforts vs. IUPUI and Syracuse. He has 10 saves and a GAA of 2.25 this fall.
• A total of six players have started all 14 games this year. That list includes James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden, sophomore Alexis Souahy and freshman Tate Robertson.
• Souahy is the only player to have been on the pitch for all 1306-plus minutes this fall. Roth has been on the pitch for 1303 minutes, while James has played 1269 minutes, Auden 1243 and Sullivan 1215.
• BGSU has taken 79 corner kicks this year, compared to 63 for the opposition. The Falcons had more corners than the opponent in each of the first nine matches of the season, but BG has taken fewer corners than the foes in four of the last five games.
SCOUTING WVU
West Virginia enters Saturday's match with an overall record of 6-8-0, and the Mountaineers are 1-1-0 in MAC play. WVU is looking to reverse a two-match losing streak. After posting home shutout wins over Western Michigan and Penn State, WVU dropped a 2-0 decision at Buffalo last weekend (Oct. 16), then headed to New Jersey and lost a 3-2, double-overtime decision vs. Princeton on Tuesday night (Oct. 20). The Mountaineers are 5-2-0 at home and 1-6-0 on the road this season to date. Individually, Jamie Merriam and Joey Piatczyc are tied for the team scoring lead with 14 points apiece. Merriam is tied for the WVU lead in goals, with six, while Piatczyc leads the team – and the nation – with 12 assists. Ryan Cain joins Merriam with six goals this fall. Daniel Diaz and Alec Boerner have split time between the posts, as each 'keeper has seen action in 10 matches. Diaz has a team-low goals-against average of 1.50 to go along with 22 saves, while Boerner has 37 stops, two complete-match shutouts and a GAA of 1.58. Last year, WVU finished 11-7-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the MAC. Head coach Marlon LeBlanc returned 19 letterwinners, including nine starters, from that club.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads West Virginia, 4-2-2, in the all-time series between the teams, and the teams split a pair of one-goal outcomes last year. In the 2014 regular-season matchup, host WVU got a late goal for a 2-1 victory (Oct. 25, 2014). But, the Falcons captured a 3-2 overtime thriller when the teams met in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament in Akron three weeks later (Nov. 14, 2014). Pat Flynn, Jacob Roth and Max Auden all scored for BG, with Auden's goal coming in the first minute of overtime. That BG win snapped a three-match series unbeaten streak for the Mountaineers. Two years ago, the teams played to a 3-3 draw in Morgantown on the last night of the regular season (Nov. 8, 2013). BGSU and WVU have not met in Northwest Ohio in nearly three years, since the Mountaineers scored with under seven minutes left for a 1-0 win at Cochrane on the final night of the 2012 regular season (Nov. 3, 2012). The teams have gone to overtime in five of the eight series meetings. BGSU is 1-1-0 at home, 0-1-1 on the road and 3-0-1 at neutral sites vs. WVU through the years.
IT'S NOT QUITE ON THE LINCOLN-KENNEDY LEVEL, BUT STILL...
There are a number of similarities and coincidences between this year's BGSU and West Virginia teams. Let's list a few, shall we?
• Both the Falcons and Mountaineers have a 5-2-0 record at home, but both programs have struggled away from home this year, as BGSU is 1-5-1 in road/neutral-site matches, and WVU is 1-6-0 away from Morgantown.
• Both programs have topped the loss total from last year. BGSU is 6-7-1 in 2015 after going 14-6-1 a year ago. WVU went 11-7-1 in 2014, and the Mountaineers are 6-8-0 in '15.
• The teams have one common non-conference opponent this year, Michigan State, and both suffered a 1-0 loss to the Spartans. MSU scored in overtime to beat WVU, and State got a goal with under two minutes left in regulation to top the Falcons.
• The teams are each ranked in the top-10 in the nation in assists. WVU is tied for first in the country in both assists (33) and assists per game (2.36). The Falcons are eighth in total assists (29) and 13th in assists per game (2.07).
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW MORE FASCINATING FALCON FACTS)
• Junior Jacob Roth scored on a penalty kick vs. Western Michigan last Saturday. Of BGSU's 23 goals this fall, only four have seen neither junior Pat Flynn nor classmate Joe Sullivan involved in the scoring. Roth HAS been involved in the scoring of three of those four goals, with PKs vs. Drexel (Sept. 3) and WMU, and an assist on a Max Auden goal at Ohio State (Oct. 7). Sophomore Alexis Souahy also assisted on that Auden goal. The Falcons' very first goal of the season saw senior Ryan James score off of a pass from redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman vs. SIUE on Aug. 28.
• BGSU is 5-0-0 this fall and 13-0-0 all time when Flynn scores a goal. The Falcons are 4-0-1 this year and 10-0-1 all-time when Sullivan finds the back of the net, and BG has gone 2-0-0 in 2015 and 5-0-1 through the years when James scores.
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals five times this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. No BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than four times since 1999 (six times).
• The Falcons were 9-1-0 when scoring two or more goals last season, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). BGSU is 5-0-1 this season and 35-4-5 in the Eric Nichols Era when scoring at least two goals in a game.
• The Falcons enter the WVU match with a record of 2-3-1 in Senior Day/Night matches in the Nichols Era, and BG has a two-match unbeaten streak in such instances. Last year, the Brown and Orange captured a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Western Michigan on Senior Day. BG's last loss on Senior Day/Night came to the Mountaineers in 2012.
