Chris Nell Named WCHA Defensive Player Of The Week
December 14, 2015 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University goalie Chris Nell was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Defensive Player of the Week Monday after No. 12 BGSU swept a road series at Bemidji State over the weekend.
Nell was instrumental in the successful weekend, stopping 42-of-43 shots, including all 28 on Saturday to earn his third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory. Nell kept Bemidji State scoreless on seven power-play chances during the series (including one 5-on-3 opportunity), while also holding the Beavers off the scoreboard during the over five minutes BSU played after pulling its goalie for an extra attacker. He finished the weekend with a .977 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average – both second among all NCAA goalies who made two starts. Nell enters the holiday break leading the WCHA with a 1.42 conference GAA and 1.46 overall mark – good for fourth nationally.
Nell joins Michigan Tech's Alex Petan (Offensive Player of the Week) and Alaska's Jesse Jenks (Rookie of the Week) among the league's weekly award winners. He is the second Falcon to earn a conference weekly award, joining Mark Friedman, who was also the Defensive Player of the Week of Nov. 30. It is the second time in his career that Nell has been honored by the WCHA as he was a league Rookie of the Week a year ago.
