Anchorage, Alaska – The Bowling Green State University hockey team, ranked No. 11 in the country, was unable to close out a weekend sweep, losing to Alaska Anchorage 6-1 Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.
The game turned in the second period after 20 scoreless minutes in the first. Freshman Brandon Hawkins seemed to get Bowling Green on the board with a goal just 30 seconds into the stanza but it was waved off after review.
Anchorage used the opening to take control of the contest. The Seawolves scored just 23 seconds into a power play at the 4:14 mark to go ahead 1-0 and added a second goal less than two minutes later.
The Falcons seemed to regain momentum after killing off a five-minute major, of which two minutes were played 4-on-4 due to an Anchorage penalty. Fresh out of the box, Brandon Hawkins fired a shot, picked up the rebound and got the puck to Matt Pohlkamp, who took advantage of the opportunity and cut the deficit in half. Rusty Hafner, playing in his first game since Nov. 15, was also credited with an assist, his first point of the season.
But those good feelings did not last long as Anchorage again built a two-goal lead just after the Falcons killed off another penalty. Only eight seconds after evening the ice, the Seawolves got a Tad Kozun goal for a 3-1 lead.
Late in the second, Bowling Green went on the man advantage after Anchorage's Austin Azurdia was penalized for cross-checking, but even that went poorly for the Falcons. Eleven seconds into the power play, and with only eight seconds left in the second period, Anchorage's Dylan Hubbs scored shorthanded for a 4-1 lead after two periods. It was the Seawolves' second shorthanded goal of the weekend and the fourth allowed by BGSU this year.
Anchorage iced the game away with a pair of goals late for the final 6-1 decision, the most goals Bowling Green has allowed in a contest all year.
For the game, Anchorage held a 31-28 edge in shots on goal. Brett D'Andrea went 8-2 on faceoffs, while Sean Walker had four blocks and Mark Friedman added three.
With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 19-10-5 overall and 15-8-3 in WCHA play. Alaska Anchorage improves to 8-20-4 overall and 5-19-2 in league play. The Falcons will close out the regular season Friday and Saturday in the BGSU Ice Arena against Alabama Huntsville. Both games are set for 7:07 pm puck drops and Saturday will serve as Senior Night.
