BGSU Alumnus Andrew Hammond Taking The NHL By Storm
March 05, 2015 | Ice Hockey
With 35 saves last night in a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets, Bowling Green State University alumnus Andrew Hammond has improved to 6-0-1 in seven starts with the Ottawa Senators. Hammond earned the NHL's first star last week (For story, CLICK HERE) and has become the Cinderella story of the league.
Hammond had never started an NHL game prior to getting the chance Feb. 18 when Ottawa's top two goalies were each sidelined with injuries. He won that first start 4-2 against the Montreal Canadiens and never looked back. He posted shutouts on back-to-back nights on the road against the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings and has not allowed more than two goals in any of his seven starts. In total, he has a 1.35 goals against average and a .955 save percentage through last night's victory.
Hammond was a mainstay for the Falcons in goal from 2009-13, playing in 119 games for BGSU -- the second-most for a goalie in Bowling Green history. He is tied for the all-time shutouts lead at BGSU with seven and had a 2.85 goals against average for the Orange and Brown. Hammond led Bowling Green to one of the most improbable runs in CCHA history in 2011-12. BGSU finished in last place in the CCHA standings that year during the regular season, but the Falcons upended the sixth-seeded Northern Michigan Wildcats in three games in the opening round series. Hammond made 34 saves in the 4-1 series-clinching victory.
In the second round, the Falcons faced the top seed and the No. 2 ranked team in the country, the Ferris State Bulldogs. Bowling Green again won the series in three games with Hammond making 54 saves in an opening game victory and 28 more to shut out the Bulldogs after the first period in a 4-3 overtime victory to win the series. BGSU advanced to the CCHA Final Four, eventually losing to Michigan 3-2 in double overtime despite a remarkable 55 saves from Hammond in the contest.
Ottawa will return to the ice Friday against the Buffalo Sabres. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
