ATHENS, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team got a strong pitching effort from both Jason Link and Tony Landi on Friday night, leading the Falcons to a 4-2 win over the Ohio Bobcats. With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-18 on the season and 4-6 in Mid-American Conference play. Ohio drops to 18-13 on the season and 5-5 in conference action.
"Jason Link gave us a much-needed outing on the mound, and Tony Landi was able to come in and finish off the job," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "Our offense had a good approach and was able to get some timely hits and produce enough runs to come away with the win. I was happy with our effort, but now we need to come out and do it again tomorrow."
Jason Link pitched a career-high 5.2 innings in the game, picking up his first win of the season in the process. The Falcons, who entered the weekend just 2-6 on the season in Friday games, needed a big performance from the senior right-handed pitcher from Hamilton, Ohio. They got exactly that, as Link allowed just one earned run to a strong Bobcats lineup.
Link was relieved with two outs in the bottom of the sixth by Tony Landi, who pitched the final 3.1 innings to pick up his second save of the year. Landi, who ended the threat in the sixth with a strikeout, struck out one and did not allow a walk or hit.
Ohio scored first in the game, bringing across an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning against Link. After a one-out single, the runner was able to advance to second base on a failed pickoff attempt to first. A Bobcat single through the right side brought the runner around third and across home to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons came back to take the lead for good in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs off Ohio starter Jake Miller. Kory Brown started the Falcons' rally with a one-out single. Brandon Howard was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on base with one out. An error allowed Brown to then score from second, as Trey Keegan reached base on a fielder's choice. A Matt Smith single scored Howard and gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead after three.
Smith added an RBI single in the top of the fifth, scoring Howard to put the Orange and Brown ahead 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons turned to Landi with a runner on first and Ohio having already pushed a run across the plate to make it a 3-2 game. Landi came in and got a strikeout to get out of the threat and hold the lead.
The Falcons produced a run in the top of the ninth, adding some insurance to their slim lead. Brown started the inning with his second single of the day, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Howard. Keegan then smacked a double into the right-centerfield gap to score Brown from second and give the Falcons a 4-2 lead. From there, Landi retired Ohio in order to preserve the victory for BGSU.
Bowling Green will return to the field on Saturday afternoon, continuing their series against Ohio. First pitch at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens in scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
