BGSU plays at Ball State Friday, EMU Sunday
The Bowling Green State University tennis team closes the 2014-15 regular-season schedule with a pair of Mid-American Conference matches on the road this weekend. Head coach Olga Elkin and the Falcons will face Ball State University on Friday (April 17), before taking on Eastern Michigan University on Sunday (April 19).
Friday's BSU match is scheduled to be played at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. Sunday's EMU dual is slated to be played at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex. Both matches will begin at 1:00 p.m.
The Falcons are coming off a 7-0 loss to Miami University Saturday afternoon (April 11) at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus. BG had just five healthy players for the match, forfeiting at the third doubles and sixth singles flights. Miami captured the doubles match at the number-two flight to take the first point, then swept each of the five singles matches that were played.
Freshman Megan Miller leads the Falcons with totals of eight singles wins and 15 overall victories in her first collegiate season. Miller has played at the top singles flight in each of the last eight matches in which she has appeared, including all seven BGSU duals since the beginning of March.
Elkin and assistant coach Stephanie Dalmacio have seen their lineup affected by injuries all season long. Saturday's Miami match marked the third dual in which BG was unable to field a complete lineup. Only sophomore Antonina Farrar and freshman Emily Witt have been in the singles lineup for all 15 dual matches to date, and only Witt has been in both the singles and doubles lineups in every spring match.
Sophomore Harley Hutchison played at the second singles flight vs. Miami, marking the seventh-straight match in which she has played at flight number two. Witt was at the third flight vs. the RedHawks, with Farrar and freshman Sydney Seeley at flights four and five, respectively.
Hutchison and Miller have teamed up at the top doubles flight for 13 of the team's 15 duals, including all six MAC matches to date, while Farrar and Witt comprised the Falcons' second-flight duo vs. MU.
Ball State enters Friday's match with an overall record of 13-4, and the Cardinals are 3-2 in MAC play. BSU has won three consecutive matches and 11 of the last 13 contests, including wins over Northern Illinois (4-3, April 10) and Eastern Michigan (5-2, April 12) last weekend. Last season, head coach Max Norris and the Cardinals went 16-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference, tying for second in the MAC standings. BSU was picked to finish third in the MAC in 2015 by the league's head coaches, according to the preseason poll.
The Falcons lead Ball State, 19-18, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Cardinals picked up a 4-3 win at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center last season (April 18, 2014), snapping a seven-match BGSU series winning streak. In last year's match, BSU won all three doubles contests, then picked up wins in three of the first four singles matches that wrapped up. Two years ago, BG dealt the Cards a 6-1 loss at the Perrysburg Tennis Center (April 12, 2013), marking the Falcons' third-straight series win by that score. BGSU is 10-7 in home matches, 7-10 on the road and 2-1 in neutral-site contests vs. the Cardinals over the years.
Eastern Michigan is 7-13 overall, and the Eagles are 3-4 in MAC play heading into Sunday's BGSU match. Last weekend, the Eagles fell at BSU on Sunday, snapping a two-match winning streak. That BSU match came after wins over Northern Illinois (5-2, April 5) and Toledo (4-3, April 10), and the Eagles began the month of April by dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to league-leading Miami (April 3). EMU's wins include a 5-2 victory over nationally-ranked UC Irvine in late February. Last year, head coach Ryan Ray and the Eagles finished 15-9 overall and 6-2 in the MAC. Last year's team tied with BSU for second in the regular-season standings, then advanced to the championship match of the conference tournament. EMU was picked to finish second in the MAC in '15 in the preseason poll.
The Falcons trail EMU, 31-13, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Eagles have won the last three meetings, including two matchups last season. Eastern won a 7-0 decision in last year's regular-season dual in Ypsilanti (March 29, 2014), and the Eagles captured a 4-0 victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 MAC Championships in Oxford, Ohio (April 25, 2014). Two years ago, EMU eked out a 4-3 decision at the PTC (March 23, 2013). That match marked the sixth time in seven regular-season meetings that a BGSU-EMU dual ended in a 4-3 score. The Falcons are 9-10 in home matches, 2-16 in road duals and 2-5 in neutral-site matchups with the Hurons/Eagles over the years.
As mentioned, this weekend's matches conclude the regular-season schedule for the Falcons.
