BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated The State University of New York at Buffalo, 8-2, Thursday (May 19) afternoon at Audubon Field. The Falcons plated one run in the first inning, and led the rest of the way. The win for Bowling Green snapped an 11-game losing streak.
"This was a great team win and a great college baseball game," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "It was really important for us to snap this streak, and try to end this season on a positive note. I was happy with the way that we kept adding to the lead throughout the game, and our pitching and defense was spot on."
The Orange and Brown improve to 17-35, and 7-15 in the Mid-American Conference with the victory. The loss drops Buffalo to 19-31 (6-16 MAC).
Tyler Anderson picked up the win for the Falcons. The right-hander went 5.1 innings, allowing his one run on five hits. Anderson struck out a career-high seven batters, and issued just one walk. Over his last three starts – facing Florida State, Kent State and now Buffalo – Anderson has surrendered just two runs across 15.2 innings of work.
Devin Daugherty and Tony Landi combined to throw the final 3.2 innings to secure the victory. Daugherty tied the school record for most appearances in a single-season with 29. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits over 2.2 innings. He also struck out two and walked one. Landi hurled a perfect ninth inning.
The ballgame started with a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Matt Smith and Greg Basalyga legged out infield hits, before Derek Drewes shot an RBI single into left field. Drewes finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI. Basalyga also went 3-for-5 on the day, and scored three runs.
In the fourth, Bowling Green opened the game up a little bit with a three-run frame, highlighted by a Nick Glanzman two-run double down the left-field line. Earlier in the inning, Basalyga scored on a fielding error by the third baseman.
Bowling Green scored one run apiece in the fifth and sixth on RBI singles from Drewes and R.J. Williams, respectively. In the seventh, after Buffalo hit a solo home run to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Drewes registered his third RBI of the afternoon with a double into the right-center field game. Drewes later came around to score in the inning on a passed ball.
Buffalo concluded the game's scoring in the bottom of the seventh, as a single took a wicked hop near first base and rolled into the outfield. The Falcons out-hit the Bulls, 11-7. Buffalo committed four errors to Bowling Green's zero.
The Falcons and Bulls will continue the series tomorrow afternoon. The ballgame is slated for a 1 p.m. start. The series will then conclude on Saturday with another 1 p.m. first pitch.
