Aliyah Gustafson Named Honorable Mention All-American
June 14, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
New Orleans, La. – Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore was named an honorable mention All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following her performance at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
Student-athletes earned first team USTFCCCA All-America honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in their events. Second team All-Americans were named for those who finish ninth through 16th and honorable mention is 17th through 24th. Gustafson placed 24th in the country in the shot put.
Gustafson threw 49-feet-6.25 in her first throw and followed with tosses of 48-4.5 and 49-3.5. She was one of just 12 student-athletes at the meet to throw at least 48-feet in each of the three prelim throws.
Gustafson completed arguably the greatest shot put season in BGSU track and field history, winning the MAC Championship and then breaking the school record at the NCAA East Regional. By virtue of her effort at the regional meet, she became just the third Falcon to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in the shot put, joining Nikki Lessig (1994) and Kerri McClung (2005). Gustafson, though, threw the furthest of the trio at the NCAA National Championships.
For BGSU, it marks the fourth consecutive year in which the team has had a representative at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a feat which has happened only once before in program history – from 1992-95. The team posted its best finish at the MAC Championships since 1999 with Gustafson earning a league championship in the shot put.
