Brooke Pleger Heads To Olympic Trials In Hammer Throw
July 01, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University alumnus Brooke Pleger will compete in the hammer throw at the 2016 US Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore. A three-time collegiate All-American who graduated in 2015, Pleger has spent the last year as an assistant coach for the BGSU Track and Field Team.
"This has been a long time coming," Pleger said. "In 2012, I was less than two meters away from qualifying and the last four years, I have been thinking about these trials and how badly I wanted to be able to make an appearance. I am ready to see what all the time and hard work dedicated to this sport will bring."
Pleger finished eighth at the USA Track and Field National Championships a year ago and has the eighth-best mark of the 24 competitors at the Olympic Trials. Her throw of 69.72m at the Mid-American Conference Championships in 2015, a MAC Championship record, is her career best and she has thrown as far as 68.02m this year. She will compete Wednesday at 4 pm EDT (1 pm PDT).
"It's exciting to finally get to this point," BGSU Throws Coach Matt Conly said. "She came closer than we ever imagined in 2012 so 2016 became a goal right away after that. This has been four years of hard work to get here and the last 10 months have all been directed at Wednesday. I'm looking forward to seeing that culminate for Brooke. The goal is to make finals and finish among the best in an Olympic year. It's been a wonderful experience to be a part of all the steps in Brooke's journey."
One of the most decorated student-athletes in BGSU history, Pleger placed third at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in both 2014 and 2015. She is the school record holder in the hammer throw and the first female three-time first team All-American in BGSU History. She was twice named Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year and twice named the MAC Most Outstanding Field Athlete. Additionally, she excelled in the classroom, twice being named an Academic All-American, Academic All-MAC and a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.
