Falcons Host Eastern Michigan in MAC Dual on Saturday
October 27, 2017 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team will host the Eastern Michigan Eagles for a dual meet at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 28). The meet will be held at Cooper Pool and will be the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools. The Falcons arrive at the meet with a 3-0 record after dual victories over St. Francis, Xavier, and Tiffin. EMU is 1-1 with a victory over Denison and a loss at Kentucky. BGSU did not face EMU last season; their most recent meeting was during the 2015-16 campaign, when the Falcons traveled to Ypsilanti, Mich. and fell to the Eagles. The Falcons beat EMU in their last visit to Cooper Pool during the 2014-15 season.
LAST TIME OUT
Bowling Green swept a double-dual meet last Saturday afternoon (Oct. 21) against Xavier and Tiffin at Cooper Pool. The Falcons defeated Xavier 166-128 and Tiffin 254-18. They won nine of the 16 events and placed second in five of the other seven. In fact, at least one BGSU swimmer placed in the top three in each event. Nikki Borgerding won two individual races and participated on a winning relay team. She swept the two breaststroke events and led off the meet by swimming the second leg in the 200 medley relay. For the second straight meet, diver Talisa Lemke swept the two diving events and surpassed the NCAA Diving Zones qualifying standards.Â
SCOUTING EMU
The Eagles finished the 2016-17 season as the runner-up at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships. Three members of the team won individual championships in the 100 breaststroke (Delaney Duncan), 100 backstroke (Alexis Mitcheltree) and 1650 freestyle (Nicole Swartz). All three earned first team All-MAC honors. Duncan and Swartz, along with All-MAC second-teamer Claire Young, are back for EMU. The Eagles are led by Peter Linn, who is in his 14th season as head swimming coach for the women's team, and Buck Smith, who is in his 18th season as head diving coach. Thus far in 2017-18, Eastern Michigan is 1-1 in a pair of dual meets. They took a loss in their season opener at Kentucky (174-124), then won 184.5-115.5 at Denison last Saturday. EMU won 12 of 16 events at that meet, led by Swartz, who captured the 1000 freestyle, the 200 freestyle, and the 500 freestyle events.
COACH SAYS...
BGSU head coach Matt Ense commented, "Eastern Michigan will be our first MAC dual meet of the year, and the Eagles come in with a very deep team and have been a tough team for us to face over the past couple of years. Whenever you face the runner-up from the Conference Championships you know you are going to have to bring your best every time we step on the blocks or go off the boards. This meet will show us what we need to focus on in the coming weeks prior to our Mid Season Invite in December."
