McLain Named Candidate for Senior CLASS Award
November 01, 2017 | Ice Hockey
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Bowling Green hockey program's senior captain Mitch McLain is one of 20 candidates for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award in college hockey. A WCHA Scholar-Athlete, McLain excels in the four notable areas for the award: Community, Classroom, Character and Competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A native of Baxter, Minn., McLain was named First Team All-WCHA in the 2016-17 season after earning WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on three occasions, in addition to being named WCHA Player of the Month for both November and December. The forward notched a team-leading 33 points on the season, which included a pair of hat trick performances, while in his career, McLain leads the Bowling Green squad with 36 goals and 36 assists for 72 points through 127 games played.
A Mild-to-Moderate Intervention Specialist major, McLain holds a 3.50 GPA entering his senior year and continues to be involved in his community though volunteering at Wood Lane School. In addition to being a SAAC representative on campus, McLain connects with his special education students at Wood Lane School to coordinate an annual field trip in which they visit the Ice Arena to meet the Bowling Green hockey team and experience activities on the ice. In addition to his time at Wood Lane, McLain also works with the Crim Elementary Reading Tutor Program and its first grade students.
McLain is one of just three candidates to represent the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the award, joining Bemidji State's Michael Bitzer and Ferris State's Andrew Dorantes.
The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's Frozen Four® in April. For more information on the candidates and award, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
