Johnson Earns First Career WCHA Award after Three-Point Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – After a three-point weekend against Lake Superior State, Bowling Green hockey's Max Johnson was named Rookie of the Week by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, announced Monday.
A freshman forward, Johnson opened the scoring on Friday night against Lake Superior State just 2:56 in when he tallied his second goal of the season at even strength lift the Falcons to an early 1-0 lead over the visiting Lakers. The forward then earned his second mutli-point game of the season as he marked the lone assist on fellow freshman Brandon Kruse's even strength goal to put the Falcons up 2-1 over the Lakers, which resulted in a 2-2 tie and Bowling Green shootout win.
On Saturday night, Johnson also appeared on the box score as he assisted on freshman Cameron Wright's team-leading fifth goal of the season on the power play, putting the Falcons up 4-1 just 2:01 into the third period. On the weekend, Johnson tallied one goal and two assists for three points, in addition to marking two shots on goal and a plus-2 rating on the ice. On the season, the Lakeville, Minn. native leads the Bowling Green squad with seven assists, and ranks second overall with nine total points.
While it is Johnson's first WCHA weekly award of his career, he is the Falcon's fourth Rookie of the Week honoree of the season, joining Eric Dop's two honors and Cameron Wright's in the first week of the season.
The Bowling Green hockey program continues WCHA play this weekend as it travels to Mankato, Minn. to face Minnesota State on Friday, Nov. 17 and Saturday, Nov. 18 at 8:07 p.m. eastern.
