Falcons Wrap Up Fall Duals Season at Michigan State
November 09, 2017 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team competes in its final dual meet of the fall semester in East Lansing, Mich. against the Michigan State Spartans. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening (Nov. 10) and will be held at the McCaffree Pool, located in the I.M. West building on the MSU campus. This is the sixth consecutive season in which the Falcons and Spartans have tangled in a dual meet, and the last two have been very close but ultimately won by MSU. Bowling Green fell 155-145 at Cooper Pool last November and 155.5-143.5 in their last trip to East Lansing in November 2015. The Falcons won the two meets prior, taking a 175-125 victory at Cooper Pool on Jan. 16, 2015 and a 150-144 win in East Lansing on Jan. 17, 2014.
LAST TIME OUT
Bowling Green dropped to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in MAC dual meets last Saturday when the Falcons dropped a 215-85 decision to the Miami RedHawks. Two BGSU swimmers won individual events. Freshman Noelle Lavigne earned her first collegiate victory in the 50 freestyle. She finished in 0:24.61, just one one-hundredth of a second faster than teammate Ashleigh Franks. Fellow freshman Sarah Hennings won for the fourth time by finishing the 100 butterfly in 0:55.95. Sophomore diver Talisa Lemke placed second in both diving events and broke her own school record in the one-meter diving event. Her new record is 299.09, and she broke the record for the second straight week. Eight personal-best marks were set during the meet, and the Falcons earned 11 top-three finishes.Â
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
The Spartans are led by head coach Matt Gianiodis, who is in his fifteenth season as head coach at Michigan State. This season, MSU is 3-6 in dual-meet action. They split their season-opening event at Iowa City, Iowa with a win over Northern Iowa and a loss to the hometown Iowa Hawkeyes. The Spartans were then swept by nationally-ranked Notre Dame and Texas A&M. MSU defeated Illinois in their home opener, then were swept in a quad meet at Pittsburgh by the Panthers, Miami (Fla.) and James Madison. Most recently, Michigan State defeated Kenyon 151-149. The Ladies were ranked #3 in Division III at the time of the meet.Â
Junior Morgan Wellenzohn was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week on October 18 after posting a 256.80 in the three-meter event against Notre Dame and Texas A&M. She posted season-best marks and won both diving events at Kenyon with scores of 284.10 in one-meter and 315.75 in three-meter. Junior Emily Brunett has the team's best time in the 200 butterfly (2:05.39) and third-best (0:58.02) in the 100 butterfly. Juniors Ana Sortland and Elle Roche are MSU's leaders in the breaststroke. Haley Kornburger has paced the Spartans' distance swimmers with team-best marks of 5:04.68 in the 500 free and 10:25.39 in the 1000 free. Senior Racheal Bukowski has done the same in the sprints with a team-best 0:23.33 in the 50 free and 0:50.55 in the 100 free.
COACH SAYS...
"This will be our last chance to compete and learn something about our races and dives before we head to the Zippy Invite in three weeks. The team has been learning how to compete when they are broken down and know the work they are putting in will pay off when we freshen up the second half of the season," said BGSU head coach Matt Ense. "In the last two seasons, the meet against Michigan State has been a very close meet and has come down to the final few events each year. Along with our team, Michigan State has a big group of freshmen, so it will be fun to see how our freshman and newcomers respond to the environment tomorrow night at McCaffree Pool."
