Falcons Face Detroit, UIndy And CSU This Weekend

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team returns home Friday to face Detroit at 1 p.m. The Falcons travel to the University of Indianapolis Saturday to take on the Greyhounds at the UIndy Tennis Center with play set to begin at 3 p.m. BG will then return home to challenge Cleveland State Sunday at 1 p.m. Both home matches will be played at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
"We go into this weekend knowing that every match is a different challenge, but the girls have been enjoying the competition and becoming even closer as a team," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio. "I can't wait to see them perform again at home this weekend."
The Falcons took on two teams last weekend. BG went 1-1 on the weekend with a 4-3 loss to Wright State Saturday evening and a 4-3 win against Dayton Sunday afternoon.
Against the Raiders, Sophomore Paula Comella and freshman Marharita-Sophia Tavpash picked up the first win for BG at the No. 1 doubles spot. Putting three points on the board for the Falcons were Comella, sophomore Polina Radeva and freshman Ayumi Sasaki.
Against the Flyers, BG earned the doubles point for the first time this season. Comella and Tavpash kicked off doubles with a 6-1 win at the No. 1 position. Clinching the doubles point for the Falcons were Radeva and Sasaki who defeated Mandy Marchant and Jade Kawamoto, 6-4. In singles, Comella and Radeva crushed their opponents in straight sets to add two points to the Falcons score. Tavpash rallied from a first set loss to capture her first win of the season.
Detroit is 3-3 on the year with victories against Toledo, Northwestern Ohio and Niagara. BGSU leads the Titans, 8-2, in the all-time series between the teams. Detroit and the Falcons met for the first time in nearly four years last year. The Orange and Brown defeated the Titans, 5-2 picking up their first win of the season in 2016. Detroit went 5-10 overall in '16.
UIndy enters the weekend with a 3-1 record. The Greyhounds have defeated IUPUI, Butler and Valparaiso with their lone loss to Illinois State. This is the first meeting between the teams. UIndy went 15-8 overall last year. The Greyhounds competed at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional defeating Tiffin and Lewis University earning a spot the NCAA DII National Championship match were the team fell to Saint Leo, 1-5.
Cleveland State has a 3-4 record on the season. The Vikings have defeated Oberlin, Case Western Reserve and Niagara. The Falcons are 3-1 against CSU. Last year, head coach Brian Etzkin team went 14-9 overall. The Vikings fell to Wright State, 4-3 in the Horizon League Semifinals.
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will not return home until Sunday, March 26 when they face Toledo in the Battle of I-75. Between now and then the Falcons will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule against Notre Dame (Feb. 25), Xavier (Mar. 3), Houston (Mar. 7) and McNeese State (Mar. 8). The Orange and Brown begin conference play at Eastern Michigan (Mar. 24).
