MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team, powered by three home runs and some late-inning heroics, defeated Morehead State University in 11 innings by a score of 6-5. The victory is Bowling Green's first of the 2017 season. The win also gave head coach Danny Schmitz his 680th win at BGSU.
"This was just a great college baseball game," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Both teams never gave up. Things have not gone our way very much through the first six games, and when we were down in the ninth inning, our guys showed some great fight. Today was all about the will to win, and our guys had it. It's always great to get the first game of a series, but this won't mean anything unless we are able to back it up with a strong effort tomorrow."
Tyler Anderson gave Bowling Green a career-best 7.0 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just three hits, while walking two batters and striking out four. He faced a career-high 24 batters, and lasted a full inning longer than his previous career best. Anderson left the game with a 2-0 lead.
Bowling Green staked him out to that 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and sixth innings. Jeff Scott hit a leadoff home run to start the game, which marked his second home run of the season. In the sixth, Jake Wilson started a rally with single to right field. Scott then moved him up to second with a sacrifice bunt, prior to Greg Basalyga scoring Wilson with another single to right field.
That lead lasted until the eighth. However, Morehead State struck for four runs in the eighth inning, and appeared to have the game won. But with one out and BGSU down to its final two outs, Cam Daugherty hit a two-run, game-tying home run to left field. The home run was the first of Daugherty's career.
Another home run in the 11th won the Falcons the game. After a Derek Drewes sacrifice fly put BG in front, 5-4, Blake Jenkins hit the first home run of his career, inching the Falcons' lead to two runs at 6-4.
In the bottom of the frame, that solo shot proved to be the difference, as Morehead State tripled home a run with two outs, but Tony Landi ended the game with a strikeout, securing Bowling Green's first win of the season (1-6). MSU drops to 5-5 with the loss.
Randy Righter went 3-for-5 in the win, while Wilson went 2-for-4. Landi picked up the win for the Falcons, as he logged 3.2 innings, and surrendered just one earned run. Bowling Green and Morehead State will conclude the three-game series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow.
