EDINA, Minn. – After sweeping Ferris State in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs, senior forward Matt Pohlkamp has been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week.
A native of Baxter, Minn., Pohlkamp marked a team-leading six-point series in the weekend's two playoffs games. On Friday night, Pohlkamp opened the scoring just 6:46 in by picking up a rebound in the crease, and scored his second of the night 2:58 into the second frame to extend the Falcons lead to 3-1. Pohlkamp also went on to assist on senior captain Sean Walker's 10th of the season just 52 seconds later, as well as on freshman Alec Rauhauser's goal that came at 5:49. Ultimately, Pohlkamp tallied three points within a 2:51 time span, leading to a Friday night total of four. The four point performance tied his career-best, and marked a new season-high for the senior.
On Saturday, Pohlkamp assisted on the opening goal that put the Falcons up 1-0 just 3:39 into the game. Pohlkamp also assisted on the power play, empty net goal with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation, solidifying the series sweep with a 5-3 final. On the weekend, Pohlkamp marked two goals, four assists, and six points, in addition to nine shots, two blocked shots and a +4 ranking. The six point series is the most in a playoff series since Dan DeSalvo put up seven versus Ferris State in the 2011-12 CCHA First Round Playoffs.
The WCHA weekly award is Pohlkamp's first of his career, and Bowling Green's seventh of the year.
The No. 4 seeded Bowling Green hockey program will travel to Bemidji, Minn. this weekend to face No. 1 seeded Bemidji State in the WCHA Semifinals. The best-of-three series will take place from March 10-12 in the Sanford Center.
