Falcons Battle Houston, McNeese State This Week
March 06, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team is traveling to Houston, Texas as well as Lake Charles, La. for a pair of duals. The Falcons face Houston Tuesday, March 7 at 3 p.m. and then take on McNeese State Wednesday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
"This week's matches will be a good way for us to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. "They are two tough teams to beat, but we are ready to leave it all on the court."
The Orange and Brown are coming off a 6-1 loss to Xavier. Freshman Ayumi Sasaki picked up the lone point for BG by defeating the Musketeers Rachael Reichenbach in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Sophomore Paula Comella forced her match to three sets, but ultimately fell 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 to Sydney Liggins. The duo of sophomore Polina Radeva and Sasaki were tied 4-4 against Liggins and Reichenbach at the No. 2 spot. The match was stopped due to Xavier claiming the doubles point.
Houston is 6-7 on the year with victories against Prairie View A&M, Abilene Christian, UTEP, New Mexico State, Kansas State and Illinois State. This is just the second time the Cougars and Falcons have faced each other. BG is 0-1 on the series with the most recent match having been played during the 2012-13 season. A year ago, Houston went 6-19 overall. In the post season, the Cougars defeated UCF, 4-0 and fell to Tulsa 4-2 in the semifinals.
BGSU and McNeese State meet for the first time Wednesday. The Cowboys have a 6-6 overall record on the season. MSU has defeated UTRGV, Grambling, UL-Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. Last year, head coach Helena Besovic's team finished the season with a 15-9 overall record and went 7-4 in conference play. McNeese State defeated New Orleans, 4-1 in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament, but dropped a 4-3 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the quarterfinals.
Following this week's matches, BG will return to Ohio to prepare for the Mid-American Conference opener. The Falcons will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
