Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team will end the regular season this weekend against Northern Illinois Friday and Western Michigan Sunday. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at Keefe Courts on BGSU's campus. In the event of inclement weather, the matches will be held indoors at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
"We've come long ways this season and we want to make sure we play the hardest yet this last weekend of regular season matches," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. "We're ready to finish on a good note and take our chances to get into the tournament."
Last week, sophomore Paula Comella and freshman Marharita-Sophia Tavpash were named Doubles Team of the Week by the Mid-American Conference Wednesday. The duo also defeated the Zips pair of junior Carli Knezevich and senior Karolina Maksimova, 6-3, picking up their 15th overall victory this season. In singles, Tavpash picked up the lone point for the Falcons at the three position Sunday versus Akron. Tavpash dropped her first set, 6-1 to freshman Rita Pedroso of Akron, she then won the next two sets, 7-5, 10-3 to clinch the win.
Northern Illinois enters the weekend with an overall record of 9-12, and the Huskies are 3-4 in conference play. NIU has defeated Eastern Michigan (5-2), Toledo (4-3) and Western Michigan (4-3). Head coach Tanya Mahefu returns six to her roster in juniors Pauline Chawafambria, Abigail Dekkinga and Adey Osabuohien and sophomores Michelle Erasmus, Meghan Montgomerie and Evelyn Youel. The Broncos were predicted to finish fourth in the league, according to the preseason poll. Last year, head coach Ryan Tomlinson lost in the championship match of the MAC Championships to Ball State (4-0). The Broncos finished the season with a 19-8 overall record and 6-2 in conference play.
Following this weekend's matches, the league's top-six teams will prepare for the 2017 MAC Championships, which will be held in Muncie from April 28-30.
Antonina Farrar and Leeah Floyd will be recognized for their contributions to the tennis program prior to Sunday's match versus Western Michigan. Both Farrar and Floyd joined the team as walk-ons in January of 2015. Farrar was in the lineup for all 17 dual matches in 2015, playing as high as the third singles flight on one occasion. She was in BG's doubles lineup for 16 of those 17 matches. During the 2016 season, Farrar was in the lineup for 15 of 21 matches and played as high as number-four singles. Floyd was in the singles and doubles lineups for each of BG's first nine dual matches of the spring in 2015. She missed the Falcons' eight MAC matches due to injury. In 2016, Floyd was in the lineup for all 21 matches in the spring and played as high as number-four singles.
