Witt, Sasaki Capture Two Points For BGSU
April 21, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green, Ohio – Junior Emily Witt and freshman Ayumi Sasaki were victorious against Northern Illinois, but the Bowling Green State University tennis team dropped its match, 5-2 at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus Friday afternoon.
"We weren't as tough as Northern Illinois today and couldn't pull through on a couple of courts to get the win," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. "Looking forward to Western Michigan on Sunday."
The Huskies took an early lead capturing the doubles point. The Falcons No. 2 duo of sophomore Polina Radeva and freshman Ayumi Sasaki were leading NIU's Pauline Chawafambira and Evelyn Youel 5-4, when the match was stopped due to a victory on court one.
In singles, junior Emily Witt picked up her first conference win of the season against the Huskies Youel on court 5. Witt won her match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to give the Orange and Brown their first point.
Sasaki won the first-set versus Abigail Dekkinga, taking a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win at the four spot for BG's second point. Sasaki led early in the third, but Dekkinga crept back tying it 5-5. Sasaki escaped with a 7-5 win in the deciding frame.
Following today's match, the Falcons will face Western Michigan Sunday to close out conference play in Bowling Green, Ohio at Keefe Courts. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, Sunday's match will be held indoors at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
Antonina Farrar, a native of Toledo, Ohio and Leeah Floyd, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio will be recognized for their contributions to the tennis program prior to Sunday's match versus Western Michigan. Both Farrar and Floyd joined the team as walk-ons in January of 2015. Farrar was in the lineup for all 17 dual matches in 2015, playing as high as the third singles flight on one occasion. She was in BG's doubles lineup for 16 of those 17 matches. During the 2016 season, Farrar was in the lineup for 15 of 21 matches and played as high as number-four singles. Floyd was in the singles and doubles lineups for each of BG's first nine dual matches of the spring in 2015. She missed the Falcons' eight MAC matches due to injury.
