May 15, 2017 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Greg Basalyga, a senior outfielder on the Bowling Green State University baseball team, was named the MAC East Player of the Week for his play on the diamond last week, the Mid-American Conference office announced Monday (May 15) afternoon.
Basalyga, a native of Pickerington, Ohio, propelled Bowling Green to a series victory over Western Michigan last week, while also contributing in the team's 12-inning loss at Ohio State. For the week, Basalyga went 6-for-18 (.333), slugged at a crazy .778 clip, and registered two home runs, seven RBI and two doubles. He also drew three walks, and scored three runs.
The senior willed the Falcons to a series-clinching win over WMU on May 13 with a two-homer, five-RBI day. Basalyga, who also scored two runs in the game, tied his career high with eight total bases, and set his career high for home runs in a single game with two.
In the series opener, Basalyga recorded another hit, and then in the finale, on Senior Day, he reached base three times, as he went 1-for-3 with two walks. He drove in two runs with a double, and also scored himself. In the midweek game at Ohio State, the senior slugged a double. Basalyga, who has a team-high eight home runs on the season, extended his hitting streak to five games across the week, as he notched a hit in all four ballgames on the week.
Basalyga becomes the second Falcon this season to earn a weekly honor, as junior Zac Carey was named the MAC East Pitcher of the Week on April 3 after throwing a complete game in a series-clinching win at Northern Illinois.
