McLain Named Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American
April 04, 2018 | Ice Hockey
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Bowling Green hockey's 2017-18 team captain Mitch McLain has been named to Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American honors for his efforts both on and off the ice. The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's hockey coaches, national hockey media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athletes in Division I men's hockey.
A Mild-to-Moderate Intervention Specialist major, McLain holds a 3.515 GPA heading into his final semester at Bowling Green State University. The captain is a three-time WCHA All-Academic honoree, in addition to a two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete. While he was a Dean's List student, McLain was also recognized as an All-American Scholar Athlete by the American Hockey Coaches Association for his 2016-17 academic successes.
A native of Baxter, Minn., McLain is a Student Achievement Assessment Committee (SAAC) representative on campus, while off campus he has volunteered more than 150 hours at Wood Lane School and coordinated fundraisers including the Rally Cap and Special Olympics Bowling. Annually, McLain connects with his special education students at Wood Lane to organize a field trip in which they visit the Slater Family Ice Arena to meet the Bowling Green hockey team and experience activities on the ice. In addition to his time at Wood Lane, McLain also works with the Crim Elementary Reading Tutor Program and its first grade students.
For his efforts on the ice in the 2017-18 campaign, McLain was named to All-WCHA Second Team honors after posting a career-high 18 goals on the season for 32 points on the year. McLain became the 71st Falcon in program history to reach 100 career points, ultimately completing his career with 101 points by 53 goals and 48 assists in 161 games played. McLain also joined the Bowling Green hockey record book when he scored his sixth career shorthanded goal in the 3-0 shutout at Ferris State (Jan. 7), and is tied for fifth-most in program history.
