Stanley Cup Finals to Highlight Tradition of BGSU Hockey Program
May 26, 2018 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Stanley Cup Finals will have a distinct Falcon flavor when game one kicks off Monday night in Las Vegas between the Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals. Both teams' general managers, George McPhee and Brian MacLellan, played for the Falcons from 1978-82, while Vegas' center Ryan Carpenter was integral on the Falcons roster from 2011-14.
Off the ice, the Orange and Brown trend will extend to Washington Capitals Assistant Coach Todd Reirden, NHL on NBC commentator Mike "Doc" Emrick, and Vegas Golden Knights Assistant Equipment Manager JW Aiken, all of whom are alums of Bowling Green State University and the Falcon hockey program.
"This is a very exciting Stanley Cup Final for Bowling Green Hockey as there are alumni involved with both teams," Bowling Green hockey head coach Chris Bergeron said. "It is special to think that someone with strong ties to our hockey program will be hoisting The Cup."
One of the most acclaimed Falcons in Bowling Green hockey program history is current Golden Knights GM George McPhee. A forward from 1978-82, McPhee was awarded 1982 First Team All-American honors, in addition to garnering the title of CCHA Player of the Year. With 114 goals and 153 assists, the forward ranks third in program history with 267 total points, and led the Bowling Green squad in points in both the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons with 88 and 45, respectively. No. 9 was named Bowling Green's first Hobey Baker Award winner in program history after his four-year career, which ultimately led to a seven-year stint in the National Hockey League where he accrued 49 points in 115 games. One of just three retired numbers in the Bowling Green program, McPhee is a member of the Bowling Green Athletics Hall of Fame after being inducted in his first year of eligibility in 1987.
A fellow First Team All-American and BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame member, Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan teamed with McPhee from 1978-82, where the Falcons earned a pair of CCHA regular season titles in addition to the CCHA Playoff title in 1979. Two-year co-captains MacLellan and McPhee tallied a four-year record of 93-63-8, while MacLellan registered 143 points by 64 goals and 79 assists. After his career with the Falcons, MacLellan enjoyed an extensive 10-year playing career in the NHL, where he recorded 413 points by 172 goals and 241 assists in 606 games played. Looking to do so for the second time in his career in the 2018 NHL Playoffs, No. 24 first raised the Stanley Cup in 1989 with the Calgary Flames.
Orange and Brown connections will also appear on the ice as center Ryan Carpenter will skate for the expansion team in the Stanley Cup Finals. A Falcon from 2011-14, Carpenter has paved his way from the collegiate level through the AHL, and ultimately has found a consistent home on the Vegas roster. In his time with Bowling Green, the forward led the team in points in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons with 30 and 33, respectively, prior to completing his collegiate career with 79 points from 37 goals and 42 assists in 100 games played. In his three seasons in the NHL, Carpenter has totaled 19 points by 11 goals and eight assists in 64 games played, while 36 of those games have been in a gold and gray jersey, where Carpenter has found the most success by tallying 15 points for the Golden Knights.
A beloved Falcon and personality on the air will be Mike "Doc" Emrick, who obtained his doctoral degree from BGSU in 1976. A Hockey Hall of Famer, Emrick will be calling from the booth. Behind the bench, 1990-94 Bowling Green defenseman Todd Reirden will be serving as assistant coach for the nation's team. Reirden tallied 76 points in his four-year career with the Falcons, by 24 goals and 52 assists in 140 games played, and appeared in the NHL for five seasons before beginning his coaching career back with the Falcons in the 2007-08 campaign.
Of the 35 NHL-ers that Bowling Green has produced, six have earned the privilege of raising the Stanley Cup, including Rob Blake (Colorado Avalanche, 2001), Dan Bylsma (Coach of Pittsburgh Penguins, 2009), Greg DeVries (Colorado Avalanche, 2001), Nelson Emerson (LA Kings Staff, 2014), MacLellan (Calgary Flames, 1989), and Ken Morrow (New York Islanders, 1980-83).
"Ryan Carpenter was here a few short years ago, which makes it that much more special for this coaching staff," Coach Bergeron added. "He is the most recent example that there are no limits to what you can achieve from Bowling Green Hockey. We wish both teams the best of luck."
Regardless of which team, more Falcon alumni will join that group over the course of the next two weeks as they hunt for the prestige of getting their names engraved on Lord Stanley's Cup. Catch game one on Monday night at 8 p.m. ET as the Knights and the Capitals battle for their first championships in the best-of-seven series.
