Cross Country Programs Set To Start Season Friday
August 29, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
Bowling Green, Ohio - Both the men's and women's cross country teams of Bowling Green State University are set to begin their respective 2018 seasons at the Toledo Rockets Invitational.
Toledo Rockets Invitational
The Falcons last appeared in the Toledo Invitational in 2016, a meet that saw the Rockets pull away in both races. Despite the loss, the teams showed promise, as current senior, then sophomore, Jonathan Wenning took third-place with Noah Schaub close behind in fourth. The women's team brings less experience with the event, but is coming off of a strong showing last season, led by senior Rachel Walny who appeared in her second consecutive NCAA National Championship.
Against the Rockets
The men's team came away with two victories against the Rockets last season. The first victory came at the Mel Brodt Invitational to open the season, while the second came at the MAC Championships to conclude the team's play. The BGSU's women's team also faced UT twice, but was not able to come away with a victory from either meet.
The Course
Not only will this serve as the first meet for both Falcon teams, but is also a test run for the future. This year's MAC Championship will be held at the same course in late-October, giving both teams a chance to test their runners. Coach Lou Snelling recognizes the advantage saying, "We will get a great look at the course on Friday with the goal of the team being more comfortable with the layout come October 27. From there we're working on the basics with these first meets along with setting a positive tone to the season."
Experience for the Women
The women's team this year will consist of six sophomores, including one redshirt freshman, Megan Aalberts, who participated unattached against Toledo last year. Led by Rachel Walny, and lone junior, Kelsie Mothersead, the team will attempt to capitalize on the youth of the team and groom a solid base moving forward for the rest of the season.
Familiar Faces for Men
The men's team will be led by four returning seniors, along with one junior. This veteran presence could be rewarding for the group as they seek to knock off Eastern Michigan, who have won the MAC Championship each of the last eight years. The team also welcomes three freshman, who will look to gain collegiate experience.
