January 03, 2019 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Swimming and Diving program begins the second half of its schedule in Fort Myers, Fla., where the team will face Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU), Buffalo, and Liberty in a triple dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 5, in the FGCU/Lee County Aquatics Complex. Saturday's meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
BEFORE THE BREAK
The Falcons are 7-0 overall in head-to-head competitions that include the Falcons' first win over Michigan State since 2014, and a narrow win (133-129) over Xavier.
The Falcons last competed in Akron's Zippy Invitational where the Orange and Brown were among three other Mid-American Conference swimming and diving programs invited to compete. The Falcons finished in fourth overall behind first-place Akron and second-place Buffalo, but finished ahead of rivals Toledo, which finished in sixth.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
In the Zippy Invitational, Buffalo Swimmers placed in the top four in 20 events. Within these 20 events, Buffalo swimmers claimed first place finishes in three events, second place in seven events, third place in seven events, and fourth place in three events.
In the Mid-American Conference preseason poll, MAC swimming and diving head coaches predicted Buffalo will finish ahead of the Falcons. The Bulls are projected to finish one spot above Bowling Green (fifth) in fourth place.
Buffalo was denied first-place victories by conference foes Akron in both Cleveland State, and Zippy invitationals – the Bulls finished second in both competitions. Buffalo was also defeated by the Zips (164-136) in head-to-head competition during its second meet of the 2018-19 season.
The Falcons must defeat Buffalo on Saturday in order to get their first head-to-head win over the Bulls in 11 years.
SCOUTING THE CCSA
The Falcons are up against 2018 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) swimming and diving championships winners and runner-ups, FGCU and Liberty. The Eagles' most recent CCSA Championship win was the team's fourth in a row.
This season, the Flames and the Eagles are leveled in CCSA records at 2-0, but the Flames are yet to be defeated at 8-0 overall, while the Eagles enter Saturday's meet at 4-5 overall.
Both CCSA programs had athletes qualify for the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. Sophomore divers Melissa Novak and Megan Wakefield, and senior swimmer Christina Kaas Elmgreen (butterfly) competed in the national championships for FGCU, while senior Alicia Finnigan (butterfly) and sophomore Payton Keiner (backstroke) represented the Flames in their respective events.
