Falcons Lifted Over Western Michigan With Late Power Play Goal

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio  - The Bowling Green State University hockey team defeated the Broncos of Western Michigan University at home in Slater Family Ice Arena on Friday (Oct. 18) night by a final score of 2-1. The Falcons tallied a late power play goal to win the very physical contest. The first period remained scoreless with many scrums after the whistle throughout the game. Frederic Letourneau found the back of the net on a power play deflecting in through the five hole late in the second period. WMU tied the game late in the third period before Max Johnson recorded the game-winning goal on the power play. The Falcons travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday (Oct. 19) to finish this home-and-home series.

- With 47 seconds left in the second period, Frederic Letourneau was positioned perfectly in front of WMU goaltender Brandon Bussi to deflect a shot from T.J Lloyd through the five hole. Lloyd and Max Johnson picked up assists. This on a power play was Letourneau's first goal of the season.
- Western Michigan scored off the stick of Hugh McGing to tie the game at one all 13:58 into the third period. Josh Passolt and Michael Joyaux recorded assists.
- Max Johnson lit the lamp for the game-winning power play goal about two minutes later at 15:34. Alec Rauhauser and Alex Barber tallied assists on the play. This was Max Johnson's first goal of the season.
Other Key Plays
- At about 5:44 left to go in the first period the puck would trickle past Brandon Bussi off the stick of Sam Craggs. The goal was waved off due to it being after the official blew the whistle. BGSU led shots on goal 16-3 after one.
- The contest remained physical throughout with a number of overlapping penalties. WMU got two for holding during a 4-on-4 late in the second period. Bowling Green scored on the 4-on-3 power play that followed.
- Bowling Green drew a late power play in the third with the game tied as Western Michigan received two in the box for cross checking. This ended up being the difference as BGSU scored the go ahead goal on the power play.
Falcon Stat Facts
- Max Johnson tallied his first goal of the season in tonight's contest lifting the Falcons over the Broncos with the game-winning power play goal. A season ago he was tied for the team lead in power play scoring with Connor Ford at 10 total. This was also the first time this season he recorded multiple points in a game.
- Frederic Letourneau also tallied his first goal of the year on a power play to give the Falcons the initial lead. He is on a two game scoring streak with two assists in the last game against WMU.
- Alec Rauhauser tallied another assist in tonight's win. The senior captain now leads the team in points with five.
- Eric Dop had 21 saves in the game, which is the second most he has faced on the young season. He stopped 22 shots against the Broncos last week in the Ice Breaker Tournament (Oct. 12).
- Falcon freshman T.J. Lloyd found the score column yet again with an assist on Letourneau's goal. He leads all freshman at the moment with two points.

- Bowling Green and Western Michigan will play the final game of these three straight meetings on Saturday (Oct. 19) night in Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Â Puck drop will be at 7:05 PM. Following this home-and-home series, BGSU will get it's conference schedule underway when they host Michigan Tech at home next weekend (Oct 25-26).
