Falcons Earn Second Point Against Mavericks on Saturday Night

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bowling Green ice hockey team battled the #16 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks in their series finale on Saturday night. For the fourth consecutive game, the Falcons were tied after regulation and required extra time to decide a winner. In contrast to Friday night's eight goal game however, there were only two goals scored in the contest, and the score was level at one after regulation. For the second game in a row, the Falcons and Mavericks headed to a shootout, where the Falcons took the extra point this time around, winning the best of three shootout 1-0.
How it happened

Neither team could break the deadlock in the first period, as goaltenders Jacob Steinman and Alex Tracy each made eight saves in the first frame.

Minnesota State took the lead 6:52 into the second period, just seconds after a Brandon Whynott penalty expired.

Six minutes later, Brett Pfoh leveled the scoring on the power play, making the score 1-1.

Ben Doran and Quinn Emerson assisted on Pfoh's goal, earning their fourth and sixth points on the season, respectively.

The physical intensity was on display, as offsetting roughing calls were made on two separate occasions in the second period.

Neither team could break the 1-1 tie in the third period, and the game went to overtime for a second consecutive night.

Both goaltenders came up with timely saves in the overtime period, each stopping breakaways with under a minute to play.

The game had a playoff feel to it, as there were 17 total penalties. Bowling Green took 10, and the Mavericks seven.

Jacob Steinman made 23 saves in the contest, plus an additional three in the shootout to earn the Falcons an extra point.
With Saturday's result, both the Mavericks and Falcons will take three points away from this weekend's series. Bowling Green now sits third in the CCHA standings, taking 11 points out of their first six games. The Falcons will look to get back into the win column next weekend, as they host Ferris State on Friday and Saturday, who is coming off a 2-0 win against Augustana on Saturday night.
