RICHMOND, Va. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened its series at the University of Richmond on Sunday (Feb. 24). The Falcons were swept in a doubleheader, dropping games by scores of 4-3 and 16-2, respectively.
Bowling Green falls to 1-4 on the season following the twin bill, while Richmond improves to 5-0 in 2019. Both games were played at Richmond's Pitt Field in Richmond, Virginia.
The opening game of the series could have gone either way. After Richmond plated four runs in the first inning, Bowling Green battled back. The Falcons scored two runs in the second, and pulled within a single run in the sixth. BGSU had the game-tying run in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but Richmond's pitching staff was able to preserve the lead.
In the second inning, Joe McGuinness got Bowling Green on the board with a sacrifice fly. Gama Martinez went on to deliver an RBI single with two outs, prior to a Jeff Scott RBI double in the sixth. On the mound, Andrew Abrahamowicz was simply phenomenal. The right-hander struck out seven over 4.2 innings of hitless baseball. Jeremy Spezia logged a pair of scoreless innings for the Orange and Brown, as well.
In the second game of the afternoon, Riley Minorik posted an RBI double while Jake Wilson scored another on a ground out. David Stopp and Damon Egnor finished out the contest by working a scoreless inning apiece.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"I thought the first game of the day was just a great college game. We did a lot of things really well, but couldn't get the key hit to tie the game. We got behind early in the second game, and it quickly got out of hand. We will have to be able to bounce back, and end this series on a positive note tomorrow."
UP NEXT
• The series finale is scheduled for tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 25) at 1:15 p.m.
• The ballgame will be streamed live on ESPN+. Freshman Tyler Hays is expected to get the start for Bowling Green.
