Falcons Defeat Oakland On Steller Field Opening Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened up its home schedule with a 6-3 win over Oakland University. Bowling Green moved to 1-0 at Steller Field with the victory. BGSU, which has lost five games by one run in 2019, improved to 3-10 overall on the young season.
Oakland started the scoring on the day with a run in the second, but the Falcons answered in the bottom half of the frame, as Ty Suntken knotted the ballgame at 1-1 with an RBI double. Bowling Green went on to take a 4-1 lead, scoring once in the third and two more times in the fourth.
Brad Croy scored on a wild pitch, giving the Orange and Brown a 2-1 lead. Mike Malewitz delivered an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth, and then a fielding error allowed Jake Wilson to come home. Oakland pulled a run back in the sixth, but the Falcons answered quickly yet again, plating two runs in the bottom of the inning to give the Falcons a 6-2 lead.
Ryan Johnston scored on Oakland's second error of the game, before Neil Lambert concluded BGSU's scoring with a bunt single that scored Malewitz. Oakland hit a solo home run in the seventh, but the Falcons blanked the Golden Grizzlies over the final two frames to secure the win.
David Stopp got the start for the Falcons, and earned the win due to being on a pitch count. Stopp logged 3.0 innings, allowing just one run while striking out three. The win for Stopp marked the first of his career.
Damon Egnor (1.0 inning) and Daniel Buratto (1.1 innings) posted scoreless innings in relief of Stopp. Jeremy Spezia closed out the win for the Falcons, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings to pick up the second save of his career.
