Eighth-Inning Rally Earns BGSU Baseball Series Split Versus Siena
March 17, 2019 | Baseball
Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, all with two outs, to earn a 3-1 victory over Siena College on Sunday (March 17) afternoon at Steller Field. BGSU moves to 2-1 at home in 2019 with the win.
The BGSU eighth-inning rally started with two outs and nobody on base. Dylan Dohanos and Jake Wilson got things going with back-to-back opposite field hits into left field. Mike Malewitz drew a walk in a pinch-hitting role to load the bases, setting the stage for Brad Croy.
During Croy's at-bat, a wild pitch scored Dohanos to tie the game, and then the senior delivered a base hit up the middle to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead. The lead would hold up, as Jeremy Spezia worked a scoreless ninth to earn the second save of his season.
Tyler Hays got the start on the mound for the Orange and Brown, and was dominant yet again. The right-hander allowed one unearned run over 6.0 innings while striking out five and walking two. Fellow freshman Will MacLean took over in relief and picked up the first win of his career. MacLean retired all six batters he faced over 2.0 perfect innings.
Wilson led the Falcons with two hits on the day, going 2-for-3 at the dish. To go along with hits from Croy and Dohanos, Neil Lambert went 1-for-3 on the afternoon.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"This was a great team win. Our pitching and defense did a fantastic job to keep us in the game. Offensively we were not great, but when it mattered most, we strung together several big at-bats. That eighth-inning rally was really nice to see. We stuck together and did not quit."
